Spay tomorrow
Saffy is supposed to be going in to be spayed tomorrow but has woken us up early this morning with a dodgy tum. Not sure if its the heat, * bits from the BBQ yesterday or excitement because my young niece had a sleep over...or most likely a combination of it all.
Anyway I'm quite concerned about her going in now, what with the heat and diarrhoea she's sure to be a bit dehydrated.
What would you do? Should I postpone her op?

Re: Spay tomorrow
I would just wait and see how she is at the time. Have a calm day with no treats but some scrambled egg.

As Hayley says take it easy today and see how she is but your vet will advise you if there is an issue

Aww poor Saffy, hope she is okay tomorrow, but if not as Hayley said, your vet will advise what is best. Good luck

Re: Spay tomorrow
Thanks everyone
I was dreading her going in already, this just got me more worried. Will try to keep her quiet today, luckily with it being so hot she's quite sleepy anyway.

I would also wait and see how she is at the time. If you explain your concerns to the vet when you go in with her I'm sure they will advise whether to go ahead or not.

Re: Spay tomorrow
At the pre-op the vet suggested giving her extra fluids during the spay...for an extra £60 of course!
I wasn't sure whether it was really necessary but if they think she's ok to go in I may have them now given the circumstances.
We were also offered blood tests before for another £60! This is on top of the spay at £250

Is this a keyhole spay ??? seems really expensive , I only payed £120 for Tilly , but all depends on your vet , mine is fantastic and reasonably priced , I would gladly pay 2 or 3 times more to know I had the confidence in the surgeon

Re: Spay tomorrow
As far as I know it's for a standard spay, I will double check tomorrow. They didn't say there was a keyhole option.
We haven't really seen them much, only for minor things. It's not a small practice so often see different vets when we go so I don't even have a clue who will be doing it
I was a bit taken aback when she told me the cost. Could be because we live in Surrey but it does seem very expensive if you paid less than half that Dave.

Re: Spay tomorrow
That does sound a lot, I can't remember exactly how much Daisy's was as she was having lots of vets bills at the time but I think it was was just slightly higher than what Dave said maybe 130/140 .
How is she doing now?

Re: Spay tomorrow
We havn't had a runny poo since mid afternoon so gave her a small dinner a couple of hours ago, so far it's stayed in. She's been drinking plenty and we've been giving her ice cubes to help. She's wandering around a bit now it's cooler but isn't her usual bouncy self. I don't think she quite knows what to do with herself.
However she's currently giving me 'the eyes' as I'm eating a magnum

Re: Spay tomorrow
I'd cancel the op.
Sorry, I'm being mean - I don't neuter my dogs!
The vet will tell you whether he thinks it's ok. Really, if she's ok in herself then she'll probably be ok. You should tell the vet, though, in case she has the runs while she's still under the anaesthetic.

Re: Spay tomorrow
I'm really tempted Caryll
It was a hard decision but she had such a miserable time with her season we didn't want to see her go through it again. It turned our confident little girl into a nervous wreck who thought every dog was going to try and rape her. It took ages for her to lose the scent and she got pestered for weeks afterwards which she hated. She's still nervous now three months on if another dog hangs around her back end for too long

Re: Spay tomorrow
Most bitches are quite capable of handling males during their season & will tell them in no uncertain terms that they're not ready - or, in fact, that they are!!! She more than likely picked up your nervousness & that's what's spooked her.
I wasn't being serious, though - just my silly sense of humour!

Re: Spay tomorrow
I didn't think you were being serious
That was me justifying it to myself I think...I'm petrified something might go wrong because in a way it is an unnecessary operation that I'm chosing to put her through.
But anyway they do them every day and I know it will more than likely be absolutely fine.

Re: Spay tomorrow
The Kong cloud looks good - much better then the lampshade that Kuchar had to wear after his castration, I wish I'd known about that then.
Regarding the spay op booked for tomorrow - tbh if it was me I'd cancel it if my bitch wasn't 100% well before the op. It's not a minor op and she will need all her resources to recover from it as quickly as possible. You still have plenty of time before her next season when she is on top form.

Re: Spay tomorrow
Just dropped her off, I feel sick my daughter is taking me shopping today to try and keep my mind off it.
She was quite bright this morning and no diarrhoea since yesterday afternoon, her temperature was normal and we opted for the extra fluids just incase.
She should be ready to come home around 5, I'll keep you posted, thank you for the support

Re: Spay tomorrow
Thank you all so much
She's zonked out on the rug now, I knew she'd be groggy but wasn't expecting her to be so sad. She cried for what seemed like ages (probably only 5 minutes) before she fell asleep. The oh thinks its because of the lampshade more than anything, I've ordered one of the kong collars so hopefully that will come tomorrow and she'll feel a bit more comfy.

So glad that Saffy got well in time for the op to go ahead successfully.
I do hope that Kong collar arrives post haste - I'm sure she'll feel much more comfortable with that on.
Wishing you a rapid recovery Saffy

She's crying because she's still confused & probably feeling a bit sicky after the anaesthetic. Once it wears off she'll start to get back to normal. It's amazing how quickly they bounce back!

Re: Spay tomorrow
That's good to know my oh has had 2 bitches spayed in the past and says he doesn't remember them crying so much. She's been wandering around and crying all evening, it's heartbreaking. Looking forward to her feeling a bit better tomorrow.

Re: Spay tomorrow
She's probably feeling all discombobulated, and the anaesthetic won't have worn off yet.
She won't feel entirely comfortable tomorrow in all likelihood, but should feel better in herself, especially if she gets her comfy collar. If she wees, poos, eats and drinks normally, then that will be excellent. If she finds comfort in a bit of an extra cuddle and lovey-dovey, that'll help her settle tonight.
Big Saffy, you'll feel a lot better soon!

Much, much better this morning she went out once in the night for a wee but other than that slept peacefully.
She has already attempted to chase the cat, get on the sofa, play with a tennis ball and wrestle me on the floor

Re: Spay tomorrow
Ah well done Saffy - atta girl!
In my lifetime I've had two bitches spayed, and one dog castrated. And guess who made the most fuss, went off food, tore at stitches, moped whilst the lampshade was on because of aforesaid tearing at stitches?
Right first time.
