Good idea or not so much ?
So we are currently in the stressful process of buying a house having been living in rented for years . When we finally move in and are all settled at some point next year we were considering getting another dog to the clan . Ziggy came from a family with other dogs , but has been spoilt being the only dog with us for the last year . He is generally a relaxed boy , meets and greets other dogs in the park correctly , sometimes seems a little stiff to begin with and looks back at me or my partner for reassurance , unless he straight away likes the other dog he meets . He has a couple of dog mates that he goes on walks with , one a jack russell who was a little sex pest with ziggy at first , another was a french bull dog , and he has a clan of 2 staffies he stays with occasionally . He is a rough player , bowling the dogs over , mouthing , wrestling and the likes , but i have never seen anything that would make me think he would be nasty , just have to call him for a time out as he has tons of energy .
We like the look of french bull dogs , they arent too big , hes had a male frenchie to play with in the past . I also thought that being another bull breed abit more hardy to the rough plays staffies are known for . Think this could be a good match ? we thought we would get a female and get her spayed when the time is right , he has been fixed also . The other option was another staffy , be it a rescue or a pup .
Any thoughts ? advice ? have any of you got a second dog and regretted it ? Did you have many problems ? Could you share your experiences when you introduced the two and the best ways to do this ?
Obviously we will need to have settled into the house and i want ziggy to feel comfortable as i know this is a stressful time for a dog , so wouldnt consider a second dog until he is ok , but just planning in advance .
Thanks for your help or input

Re: Good idea or not so much ?
I personally like Frenchies too. Could be a good mix or bad and mostly depends on the frenchie. They can be a bit standoffish like a cat or really outgoing. Boston Terrier might be a better small dog or another Staff. Mine drag each other all over and they can stand up to the rough play. I'd personally be worried a full grown Staff could/would hurt either a boston or frenchie pup though as they are very tiny!

Im not a fan of them purely because of the problems they have with their eyes and noses, but they are cute enough.

Ive got no experience with having a 2nd dog, but I would assume it also depends on each dog, an introduction maybe of the new pup before buying just to see how it goes?

Re: Good idea or not so much ?
I have had two dogs before and really think it depends on the dog. i had my staffy first and decided he needed a friend, he was around 4 at the time and i had had him for 3 years. i rescued a 2 year old female rottie mastiff cross, sasha . they were inseparable. when we got sasha from the rspca she was under weight and we had to commit to taking her back to be neutered once she was heavier, we did so and she had a severe allergic reaction to the antibiotics afterwards and unfortunately died. we waited a couple of months and the rescued a two year old female staff cross Tia. everything was fine for about a month and then she started attacking echo at every opportunity....including chewing through a door to get to him. i got a trainer to come round who concluded she would be better as an only dog. we persevered for a couple more weekday, but after the fourth trip to the vets with echo we decided Tia had to go, luckily my friends mum wanted a dog and the rescue we got her from were happy with that so she went their and has been fine. we decided to stick to just one dog after that. we lost echo to cancer and now have sonic. she will stay an only dog as the stress of two is not something i wish to go through again, that said if we hadn't lost sasha i would probably have different views as the Tia situation wouldn't have occurred.

Re: Good idea or not so much ?
thanks for all the comments guys , we have decided we wont be getting a frenchie as i would be worried re their health problems to do with breathing problems . We will definately be considering a female staff , puppy or rescue we will be going through the options . The new house will have room to seperate if it ever needed to come to that but we hope that wont be the case
