Saxon Bit Me!
I was sitting on the floor folding laundry and Saxon came over. He gave me an "I want to play" look and snapped at my face! He didn't bite hard enough to break the skin or leave a mark, but it was still shocking and hurt a bit. I said no very sternly and, I'll admit that in my surprise I did smack him on the head. What do you all think was his motivation for the bite, how can I prevent it in the future and how should I handle it if it happens again?

I certainly would never hit him again!! It was a reflex from getting bit! I am not a believer in hitting/smacking/kicking dogs as a form of training!!
I think a naughty spot is a good idea, though.

I'll tap Moo's bum when she is naughty, not hard but cause she is not used to it she knows she has done wrong. Again he should grow out of it, just keep being firm.

This is my approach too. Emma likes to chomp at our faces (i think she thinks it's play) and I cry out. works every time. I did the same thing with Fritz but Abe didn't and now Fritz won't even play bite me but will Abe... the higher pitch the better, like a puppy in pain.

Re: Saxon Bit Me!
I've been yelping when he nips me, but didn't think to do that this time! I'll definitely keep that in mind if it happens again.
Thanks for all of the input everyone!!

I would say "what have you done" and "bad boy" then put him in another room for a few minutes, he will soon realise it's something that won't be tolerated.
After all dogs can only learn from what we teach them.
