Sucker For a Sob Story. - Now with added pictures.
Hi guys, great looking site.
We've just been dooped. We've always been cat owners as our two boys grew up. They're both teenagers and our rescue moggy passed away last year. My brother has always had dogs. We've always enjoyed walking and enjoyed taking my brothers German Shepherd out. We have discussed getting a dog on many occasions, so when a couple of weeks ago I suggested to my wife a couple of weeks ago we visit our local RSPCA rehoming centre she jumped at the chance. It only a couple of miles from our house. We turn up and a good long chat with some of the staff before viewing the dogs, we had an idea we'd be suited to a Staffie. Both active, good size garden, someone at home most of the day and rural location, lots of fields and woods with the coast only 30 minutes drive away. As we walked along stopping and petting every dog we passed we spotted HER. a pretty 4 year old tan and white that was in because her owners could no longer care for her. As we approached her enclosure, instead of barking like so many of the others she ran inside and returned with the manly old piece of cloth hanging out the side of her mouth. "Pick me,I'm already packed".
We went away and had somelong discussions over the following week to make sure we didn't rush in. Saturday just gone we popped back and before we knew it we had her on a lead and we being walked. The only thing stopping us reserving her there and then was we don't have an enclosed garden. As it would be difficult and very costly to fully enclose it was suggested we could make an enclosure. This should be finished this weekend and our home visit has be arranged for Monday.
This will be our first dog and we've been reading up on Staffies, looks like we'll be getting plenty of exercise and we have purchased plently of heavy duty chew toys. We lots to learn and hope to be tapping you guys up for tips.
Cheers for now, I'll post again next week to let you know how things are going.
Update, pictures as requested.

That reminds me so much of that advert a little while back where the dog in the kennels put on a show for the people to get them to take him!

Re: Sucker For a Sob Story. - Now with added pictures.
Wow, thanks for the very warm welcome.
Just a quick update, our enclosure is now complete and we have had our home visit. We should be picking her up on Monday morning.
We had a good long chat with the staff again, this is the second time she has been rehomed. She had gone out and the new owners struggled because she was quite aggressive towards other dogs. Hopefully we might be able to socialise her to some extent. I'll be after tips on this and start a blog in the diaries section. Any tips?

Re: Sucker For a Sob Story. - Now with added pictures.
Yay, picked her up this morning, lots of fun. One slight accident on the carpet. But she seams to be settling nicely. She is about 5-6 years old not 4 as we were first told. She sits lovely, lays down and gives her paw. She does show interest in other dogs, we ignore this and just walk on by.....oh yes she loves her new toys and has killed the squeaker in one. The grubber rugby ball, knotted rope toy and kong are a little more staffie resistant.
Her name is Ruby.

Ruby is stunning
We were chosen by a rescue staffy as well. We now can't imagine life without her.
Our Maddie was very dog-aggressive in kennels but now, after a few months calming down, she tends to be more over-excited and wanting to play. Hopefully Ruby will be the same, given time.
Welcome to staffy world - you won't regret it

Re: Sucker For a Sob Story. - Now with added pictures.
I. Can't believe how good she is, she knows lots of commands.......in the house at least. When we feed her she leaves her food until we tell her she can have it. I placed a chew on her front paws last night, she didn't budge until I told her to. You can take her food away without a flinch.
We left her at home for the first time today for a couple of hours, when we returned she was waiting at the back door with my sons sock in her mouth. We had ley her have the run of the utility room, hall, landings and two flights of stairs. Shutting every other door, she had managed to open the lot.
We passed another dog very close this morning, both dogs pulled strongly so that they were on their hind legs, but there was no snarling.
My wife and I have always maintained that we would never buy a pet as there are too many animals in rescue centres and too many uncaring breeders.

sounds like it's going really well , if she had all that run of the house (through her skills of entry ) and only picked up a pair of socks that's fantastic
