best organ meat ? and substitueing some of the mince raw advice plz
my dogs have bin on DAF's Chicken and tripe mince mix now for over a motnh ad what a difference it has amde from kibble, my fat girl has lost weight and looks much slimmer my boy now eats all his food there coats look great and i think the girls yeast issue is on its way to getting better slolwy as she is foot chewing a lot less than she has bin and wow to the lack of poo !!!
over time i want to become a bit more adventurous with there diet it will be a slow process though of working it out
i want to start adding in some extras this time
so was thinking of once or twice a week adding in a bit of liver to there meal ?
i wondered what those in the know thought ? i would like to slowly change it so instead of having a 1lb block of mince each a day they get a block split between them and then other bits to compensate,
do you think i could do half a lb block and some chicken wings and necks instead ?
im looking to keep it reli simple xxx

Different organ meats are high in different vitamins. I buy a minced mixture of all of them cus this is the only way one of my dogs will eat any offal.
I pinched this from a website - http://all4women.co.za/health-and-wellness/nutrition/offal-awful-health.html
Its a human website but dogs get the same vitamins from offal so thought it would be ok to use.
"The benefits of offal include the following:
Liver is an excellent source of vitamin A, riboflavin and vitamin B12, a rich or excellent source of niacin and iron, depending on the type, a rich source of folate and a useful source of vitamin B6 and zinc.
Brain is a soft meat usually from lambs or pigs and is an excellent source of vitamin B12 and a useful source of niacin.
Heart is an excellent source of protein, riboflavin, niacin and vitamin B12. It is also a rich source of iron and a useful source of zinc.
Kidneys are an excellent source of riboflavin and vitamin B12, a rich or excellent source of iron and niacin, depending on the type and a useful source of thiamin, zinc and folate.
Oxtail is a good source of vitamin B12, and contains riboflavin and vitamin B6, but is very high in fat.
Tongue, usually ox or lamb, can be high in sodium. Stewed sheep’s tongue is an excellent source of vitamin B12."
To get a good balance and still keep it really simple you could change the flavour of your mince to another meat. Eg. Beef or lamb. and then feed chicken wings or necks to supplement it. Then twice a week add some liver or another organ meat instead of the chicken wings

Or instead of chicken wings you could give a lamb spine or something, bones are good for digestive system, keep teeth healthy and provide entertainment so they are good to include.
When mine have their twice weekly 'bone day' I just chuck em out in the garden with a venison bone chunk or similar.

My 2 are raw fed but I'm not as adventurous as other raw feeders -
My 2 get beef n tripe each morning
Evenings could be beef or chicken chunks - or heart
They have complex b vitamin supplement daily, vitamin e, starflower oil, garlic n fenugreek, virgin olive oil and apple cider vinegar. Every other day vitamin c supplement.
They are both doing very well x

Re: best organ meat ? and substitueing some of the mince raw advice plz
I feed once a day so it makes it easier
The get some sort of boneless meat and something with bone in (this can just be a whole animal i.e rabbit)
They get one meal of organ meat a week on a rotation so one week liver, the next kidney, spleen, brain and so on
Liver is ESSENTIAL in a raw diet but all organ meat have different nutrients and benefits
definitely add some whole bones in especially for the dental benefits, you can try chicken wings, carcasses, necks whole chickens to start with then move on to lamb spines, pork ribs, necks etc etc

i feed my two once a day in the morning
i'm thinking buying tripe mince and giving them half a tripe block each then a chicken wing and a chunk of chicken neck, and then the odd bit of organ meat
ella when you say one meal of organ meat a week do you give purely organ meat for that meal or just a chunk once a week
and im trying to pick between lamb or pork bones for a treat
ella where do you order from ? xx

what do you think would be better to buy a box of lamb bones or a box of chicken carcases ?
how would i incorporate a carcase in to a meal if i was giving the previously mentioned tripe, wing and neck meal daily ?

personally lamb bones as red meat is better for dogs so i try feed as little poultry as i can but i do understand it is cheap
Don't feed the same thing each day basically feed a carcass one day instead of the wing and neck
I never feed the same thing 2 days running, i try and feed completely different each day

Re: best organ meat ? and substitueing some of the mince raw advice plz
thanks for the suggestion of the carcase instead of wing and neck
i plan to eventually get up to a nice variety of different foods etc my dogs are quite fussy though and at present we don't have as much freezer space as we hope to have one day for them only a normal fridge freezer which they have nearly all of for there food
you say the lamb bones are good so could for example as i would like to keep a good chunk of there meal tripe as they love it so much do
tripe chicken wing and neck
tripe chicken carcases
tripe lamb bone
would the tripe and a lamb bone be as adequate as a meal of tripe wing and neck ?
i plan to order a box of the liver chunks this time round and build on offal as i go each time, i have so far only ordered once from DAF , my next delivery date is the 13th so trying to figure out what i want to get this time round to make it a bit more fun

Re: best organ meat ? and substitueing some of the mince raw advice plz
that's the plan
i would love to have the space and money to go mad and order a bit of everything lol
i was just wondering visavi tripe
i did a rough bit of maths for the 80/10/10 thing to just get an idea of how much tripe i would need and seems to be abotu 364 grams a day each, i tried to convert this to the actual chunks of tripe instead of the blocks of mince and it seems like i would need a lot more,
last time i ordered 4x 10 1lb boxes of the mince, seems i would need to order 7 4kg boxes of the chunks though, dose this seem right ?
i just thought the actual tripe chunks would be a bit more fun than the frozen minced tripe if i have the space lol xx

Re: best organ meat ? and substitueing some of the mince raw advice plz
haha i don't do any maths for the boys, i never weigh anything or work out how much they need to make the ratio right i just feed as i want and grab whatever for the freezer
So 4 of the 10 lbs box is 18kg thereabouts
so to get about the same you would need 5 of the 4kg boxes as thats 20kg.
7 x 4kg would 28 kg so it's up to you

Re: best organ meat ? and substitueing some of the mince raw advice plz
i must have spaced somewhere on my maths lol
how you put it makes so much more sense
my husband and i wer just talking about it and said we think this order we are going to opt for
tripe wing and neck and some liver
next time we will get some carcases as well and another type of offal and try and add a new bit in each time till they are on a different meal each day
and hopefully soon be able to afford another freezer for the shed for them
if you were going to give yours a meal of tripe chunks, wings and neck chunks, how much of each would you give in a bowl ?
without seeing how much is in each box my mind would go too like 2 bits of tripe 1 wing and 1 neck and then once a week a chunk of liver
i appreciate your guidance im reli looking forward to my next order now lol

Re: best organ meat ? and substitueing some of the mince raw advice plz
haha no worries
On the meals i'd give a couple of wings/necks and a good chunk of tripe, some of the chunks are pretty big but i never cut them up
You could also try feeding the chunk frozen to make them work harder for their food

oh i like that idea haha although my girls would probably neck it frozen lol
do you think you could fit the following in a fridge freezer freezer compartment ?
5-4kg boxes of tripe
1-4kg box of wings
1-4kg box of neck chunks
1-4kg box of liver chunks
i managed to fit 40 1lb blocks of mince in to the bottom two draws and still used the top for the odd bit of frozen we bought lol

So yes you can give everything frozen.

erm i don't know really
I don't weigh there food. But with the DAF minces i give them 1 between them and a bone. OR 1-2 of the chunks (they tend to be pretty big) and some bone
Or a chunk of liver with whatever.
You really aren't likely to underfeed them so i wouldn't worry

Re: best organ meat ? and substitueing some of the mince raw advice plz
ah i feed once a day to just mid afternoon.
I'll explain best i can. The boys get roughly the same amount of food.
Chance weighs 50kg or thereabouts, harvey weighs about 24kg
They need roughly 500g a day each to maintain there very lean weight.
So if i was doing tripe and wings they would get 1 tripe chunk and about 4 wings. But 1 tripe chunk 1-2 wings and a neck chunk would equate to around the same weight.
Don't get to hung up over the exact amount they eat. I never weigh anything i also DO NOT feed the same amount of food each day. Some days they may get a kg each then next 200g. I also do, do gorge meals but these are anything over 2kg IMO, and not something you just give them they need to get used to large portion sizes

i have a chest freezer full of bits of animal, today we had a chunk of tripe, chicken neck and a wing for our food, kept all frozen, my girl went mad for it clearly had lots of fun eating it and she normly necks her food...my boy ate his neck chunk then decided to leave the rest to defrost.ate his tripe a bit later and turned his nose up at the wing so my girl ate it lol :)x
