Toilet training
Please help. I have had Coby for about 5 weeks from a dogs home. He is nearly toilet trained but keeps having a few mis-haps. Yesterday he weed on the carpet near the door so I blamed myself for not knowing he wanted a wee. Today however the back door was open and he just looked at me while he did a wee on the lounge rug. They said he. Fond as a stray and is about 4. He was castrated last Friday, doing really well Neil effects. Any ideas how to get him outside, I have tried keep taking him out and making a big fuss (started with a treat) every time he wees in the garden. This is the first time I he has weed in front of me in the house, normally I just find the wet patch here and there. Any good ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Toilet training
I would try back to basics, and make sure you clean the spot really well, so he doesn't mark it again. Its going to take a bit of time as he is still settling in
Maybe come and say hi

Re: Toilet training
Yeah it is early days, he's still settling in.
Daisy was a rescue last year and we had accidents for the first few months, gradually less and less. But she was the same, she'd just wee in front of me, like she forgotten where she was or something. This was how I taught her, take himr out in the garden, wait until he does something, as soon as he starts say 'do your business' or whatever phrase you choose, say it the whole time he's doing it then as son as he's done praise him. Do this everytime, in the garden and on walks, eventually he will start to assoiciate the phrase with the action, hope this helps
Oh also make sure you clean up really well where he has messed overwise he'll we again on the same spot.

Re: Toilet training
Have a good supply of carpet cleaning stuff, figured I may need it. That sounds like good idea, will try that idea. He doesn't really make any sounds at the mo, a few typical staffie cries but no bark. I had a staffie cross before who never asked to go out (barked) so I am use to trying to spot the body language but he is on the go quite a lot around the hose so it is bi harder to read.

Re: Toilet training
Personally I would never use pads, get them straight outside, use basic methods, out and praise, like you would with a pup Xx

Re: Toilet training
I don't fancy the pads tbh, he is bit old to learn to use them and then unlearn it to go outside. Outside is the best option I think.

Re: Toilet training
For now don't wait until you think he needs to go out just take him out really regularly, you can reduce the time gaps as he gets better

Re: Toilet training
Make sure to clean everywhere he wees indoors really well after as he will be tempted to do it in the same spot - it's natural for a dog. You can get special dog mess deodorisers but I think the stuff in them is the same as in Vanish. I also put lemon juice or smells he didn't like in the spots where Rupert was threatening to pee.
I also looked after a rescue for a while who did this in front of me - I felt like she was testing my boundaries or something. I was never sure.

Re: Toilet training
Don't forget that Coby is still settling in to life with you, and won't have got rid of his stress levels completely yet. Add to that the recent neutering, and you have a fairly anxious doggie!
I don't think dogs pee inside to either test boundaries or to spite their owners - I think they do it either because they can't help it (desperate to go & can't get outside in time) or because they don't fully understand what you want them to do. Either way, it's your fault, not his!
That's in no way a criticism, just that you haven't quite got through to him that he shouldn't pee indoors and it'll take a bit more time & training to get him there!
Good luck, I'm sure he'll be fine & well done for giving him a great home!

I know he doesn't do it to get at me, he is still learning. I just needed a few ideas to help him along.

Re: Toilet training
I'd keep taking him outside at regular intervals, and praise him when he goes (I think you said that's what you're doing anyway?), and make sure you clean up any accidents indoors. A cheap way of doing this is to use a solution of biological washing powder/liquid - but do check that your carpet is colour-fast first!
