Broken tooth
Woody was acting strangely fidgeting and licking his lips so i had a quick look in his mouth to see if he was chewing something and I noticed that the tip of his tooth has broken off and the red pulp is just visible so I think a vet trip might be in order. Does anyone have any experience with this and what would you recommend?

Re: Broken tooth
Definitely worth a trip to the vets, as it could be quite uncomfortable. It does need attention if the pulp is exposed, as infection will most likely set in if it's left. The vet will probably offer to do either a root canal or an extraction of the tooth.
Good luck!

Aww hugs for woody >< hope you get in sorted as soon as possible at the vets

Re: Broken tooth
I would think the vet'll remove the tooth. It's only an incisor, so it won't cause any problems for him if it's taken out.

Thanks for the replies
I was just wondering do you think he will still be ok on raw meat for his tea (no bones) or shall i give him something else?

Re: Broken tooth
He should be ok. If the tooth needs work the vet might recommend something else for a short while, but otherwise there's no problem!

Re: Broken tooth
That looks a bit sharp so he might file it so there are not pointy bits anymore. might not need removed

Re: Broken tooth
If the pulp is showing, it will need something doing to it to prevent infection. It'll be a minor thing though, especially as you've noticed it quickly!

Re: Broken tooth
Well done for spotting it early and saving much unneccessary pain, vet will know whether extraction is needed or not

Re: Broken tooth
Perhaps give him softer raw food until the vet's sorted the tooth out?
How did he break it?

Re: Broken tooth
Been to the vets yesterday so now hes booked in on Tuesday for a root canal if the tooth can be saved or its gonna be pulled out and only for a cool £600 which luckily I wont be paying for as hes insured phew!
To be honest I have no idea but the vet said apparently its common for staffies to get broken teeth because of how rough they are? He likes to play with with rocks at the beach so maybe that caused it but I guess I will never be sure

Good luck! Hopefully the root canal can be done, as you seem to have caught it early!

Re: Broken tooth
Good luck with the treatment, just check you are covered for dental, not all insurance policies do cover it, best to be safe.

Re: Broken tooth
Wow, £600 it was £120 for Ledger to have two teeth removed when one his broken ones got an infection which I spotted (they found the second) they told be to check with insurance as some don't cover dental. I was with Sainsbury's at the time and they said as long as it was injury rather than illness it was ok just needed to prove that he saw the Vet for an annual check up
Ledger doesn't actually have many teeth 3 of his canines were missing/broken when I got him and Dogs Trust had no idea why and would only assume that it was from chewing rocks although he has never done that since he has been with me

Re: Broken tooth
The policy says 'excludes dental treatment except as a result of a sudden and unexpected injury' so I assumed he would be covered but we had a chat with the company and they said the same thing as long as it was from a injury and not illness he would be fine

Re: Broken tooth
Millie our Kelpi x ran into a bird bath, was chasing her toy and smashed loads of her teeth bless her, the vet had to take quite a lot of them out. She was on soup to start with.

Re: Broken tooth
Woody came home yesterday from the vets and he was a little wobbly but otherwise ok. He ended up having a root canal done and the chip wasn't that bad, although apparently if the tooth had to be removed he would of needed bone cut out of his jaw because the tooth root was so big
When he came home looking a little sorry for himself ><

Re: Broken tooth
Bless him. Our Louie managed to take the top off his bottom canine which had to be removed. £675 later... Tesco insurance advisor said to write 'accidental trauma to tooth' so we would be sure to get money back and we did with no quibbles.
he's coping ok without it although if he's cleaning himself on the non-tooth side he sounds like a little vacuum cleaner!
hope he feels better now xx
