Odd behaviour ... Concerned .. Empty Odd behaviour ... Concerned ..

Post by Jackieb Wed May 29 2013, 20:11

I've had a hugely stressful day at home today with my kids and their friends - broken laptop - I'm not happy, I shouted a lot earlier..... Then like half hour later noticed Tank cowering in his crate shaking - so much the crate was jangling.... I've fussed him, given him a stuffed kong which he devoured ... But 3 hrs later he's still 'avoiding me ' and I just saw him I'm the corner by the patio door laying down (this is a first)

Has my outburst with unruly kids freaked him out ? I dunno what to do.

My Girl Diesèl is 'acting normal'

Yes, you've worried him. He might be a bit more sensitive than Diesel. By tomorrow he'll probably have forgotten all about it!

Caryll's got it in one.

Kuchar's the same when my son and I "have words" at high volume - Kuchar goes and hides under my bed.

Some dogs are more sensitive to "atmospheres" than others, but as Caryll says, by tomorrow Tank will have forgotten about it. Go and give him a cuddle!

Darcy doesn't like raised voices which has happened occasionally since we've got her Blushing once I realised I try not to shout around her, or have anyone else shout, (not always easy I know) he's probably a sensitive soul & will bounce back soon. Smile

Don't worry, he won't hold it against you! >Big Grin<

Dempsey's a bit like that - if there's an atmosphere after a row he goes all waggy & hunched & follows me around like a lost soul!

Next day (sometimes next minute) it's as though nothing's happened! Wink

Tank is just confused by your behaviour I would guess, has he heard you raise your voice before ??

Rocky hates it if he hears shouting on the TV, we have had to change channels before because of this.

Debo is like that. We've move house recently and there was a lot of putting furniture together and of course a lot of bad words..... First he didn't know what to do, he tried to"help" ,which lead to more bad words . So he went to his crate. Now when he sees that we are about to put some furniture together ,he goes there straight away.

Don't beat yourself up Jackie, life can't always be calm and peaceful!

In fact, when Tank jumped up at you for reassurance, a full-on hug and fuss might have made things worse for him - like when I in all innocence and best intentions used to cuddle and fuss a previous dog who was afraid of thunderstorms. A quick pat and a calming word is much better at reassuring the dog that there is nothing to worry about. The cuddle I advocated above is for after the fracas, when he is sulking but in all probability can't quite remember why!

He'll be OK! >Big Grin<

Dont worry mate, alot of dogs are like that especially if they arnt used to it. neither of mine are used to raised voices but I stubbed my toe a few weeks back and the air turned blue. marley ran up and licked my face while laska hid in the kitchen and cowerd. when i apporached her she slinked back and went under the kitchen table which broke my heart. i had to tempt her out with treats and then give lots of cuddles before she settled on me for night. next day was like nothing had happend but that sorry little face is etched into my mind

Only one of our dogs gets like this when I get mad but she gets herself in a right state! Shaking and panting and making a 'huff-huff' noise. She will also scratch at you and try and climb on your lap, not great when you are fuming! So she inevitably gets told to go away which makes her worse! She settles down after a while, but if you stroke or speak to her she gets worse.

I posted something similiar (on the wrong forum lol) about Ruben. Me and this woman were having words, when I started shouting Ruben started playfully barking, when I pointed my finger at the woman he started jumpin up on me,not playfully. Im gutted as I know it must be due 2 something Ive did in the past,I honestly can't think tho,Ive never "smacked" him,he doesn't need 2 b,Im just totally gutted and at a loss as 2 why he behaved like that towards me but didnt do anythin wen the woman was screamin at me like a banshee:cry:

Ah Ange - it's unfortunate but true that dog-walkers will cross swords sometimes, and if the other person starts screaming like a banshee then it's very hard not to lose one's own temper and shout in reply. It's the shouting that sounds to a dog like barking, and the dog will pick up on the antagonism between the humans and add his own contribution by barking in his turn - he probably doesn't know what the cause of conflict is but is voicing his concern. His jumping at you was, although not playful in the circumstances, was probably a plea for reassurance, heightened by being over-excitement.

If Ruben is otherwise a well-behaved dog towards you and other humans/dogs, then if I were you I'd write this off as a case of over-excitement/anxiety in the face of a situation between two humans, and that Ruben didn't understand.

Lol poor puppies! I'm so glad i've found this site! My young boy does the same! My old boy I nearly tripped over today coz he stood right behind me and didn't budge when I stepped backwards and being 6 months pregnant I yelped at him as he also startled me... and then i couldn't find my young boy who was cowering in the carport! I never usually raise my voice but if anyone does the young fella gets the shakes (just like sitting on a washing machine! I loved that comment lol
