Not eating morning feed
Following on from my previous thread where Zeus has stopped eating his food, it's mainly his morning feed that he isn't bothered about. He gets excited when he knows its coming, smells it then just leaves it. However, he scoffs down his evening feed. Why could this be?
I was thinking of either switching the amounts to 25% of his feed in the morning and 75% in the evening, or simply feeding him once a day (which I don't really want to do)..
He's also sleeping quite alot, I took him to the park yesterday for around 2 hours, he slept at around 7pm, all the way through the night, he woke up for an hour or so around 8am, and hes been asleep since!
Any thoughts?

Re: Not eating morning feed
If he's healthy & lively in every other way I'd just reduce his morning meal, or even cut it out. I feed twice a day, but the main meal is the evening. The morning is just a couple of handfuls of food.

Goldie, Doug does the exact same thing with his breakfast and his behaviour is also the same as Zeus's - I wonder why they do this?

Re: Not eating morning feed
I feed darcy a smaller meal in the morning, prob 25/75 like you said, mainly because she wasn't eating it all in the morning.

I feed Logan twic a day because it is what seems to work for him. Albeit, at times he can still be very picky even with that.

Caley did the same, we ended up cutting down her breakfast and giving it to her in a kong instead (she loves it) and we increased her evening meal, she has been fine since.
I think with Caley she likes to build up an appetite before she eats lol

Re: Not eating morning feed
i'd feed once a day, so i'd just gradually cut the morning feed out, as IMO once a day feeding is sufficient for an adult dog

Two schools of thought on that one!
But yes, some dogs actually do wean themselves on to one meal a day!

Re: Not eating morning feed
Bailey started refusing his morning feed so I just cut it out completely and he's so much better with his eating. Finishes everything 90% of the time! Sierra is only 8 months so is on 2 feeds a day but will be going onto 1 in the next couple of months

Re: Not eating morning feed
Can't help, Loki gets his meals twice a day, 50/50, but I suppose he isn't feeling very hungry in the morning, so you could maybe feed the morning one a bit later, or cut it out and feed in the evening.

I also feed less in the morning. Sometimes she eats it sometimes not, I don't worry, and the sleeping could be down to the occasional warmer weather

i've tried a few times over the last few years to give sash a bit of food for her breakfast but she's never been interested, she does look foreward to her dental stix after her morning walk thou ,i'd say long as he's eating his dinner in the evening i would'nt worry to much.

Re: Not eating morning feed
Lola and Chloe have both recently stopped eating their breakfast. I put a small amount of wainwrights down and leave it, and if it's still there on a teatime, I mix it with their liver/sardines/chicken. then it goes immediately :-) it seems to be something they do themselves - cutting themselves down to one main meal. they do still get kongs with treats in, and bits and pieces throughout the day, and we ALWAYS share our lunch with them - I know we shouldn't

Re: Not eating morning feed
Leder has an even split of food morning and evening but that's how my parents dogs were always fed and how Ledger was fed in rescue. It only changes on tues and wed nights as we have agility so he has his evening meal split

Re: Not eating morning feed
Thanks for your comments everyone, I think that's what I'm going to do, split his morning feed into a smaller one and feed the bigger portion in the evening, and see how it goes!
Any idea on the excessive sleeping? He was asleep pretty much all day yesterday, the whole night before, and hes been sleeping pretty much all day today aswell.
