keeping staffies cool.
does any one have some tips now that the weather is getting warmer on how to keep the dogs cooled down. i live in an apartment with romeo and even though the weather is lovely i can already see the effect of the warm weather on him (its maybe 25 degrees) its just we live 8 months of the year in the negitives so... hmmm...
so far i'm just hosing him down a little so he's damp and putting some ice cubes in his water... any other ideas?
or how do your dogs deal with weather changes

Ella posted a link in the products section about a cooling collar, maybe that'd help? Besides that, giving him ice cubes to crunch up, splashing some water on his paws, chest and stomach should help a bit. Can't really think of much else

Darcy really has struggled in the last few days, I've filled a padding pool in the garden & keep wetting her underneath & paws

sasha loves the hose pipe spraying on her if she's in the garden,a wet towel indoors if its really hot like at night.

Yep i have my collars on the way but they have to come from america so takes a while to get here!
I make sure there is plenty of water around all the time, and i regularly wet Chance especially down with cool water, down his chest, his ears and inside of his legs particually

A damp towel to lie on helps too. What I like to do is place a hoof, chewy toy or treat in a big bowl, fill it with water and freeze it. The frozen outcome keeps them busy for ages! I also freeze hooves with a bit on peanutbutter in as well as making gravy ice cubes. My two aren't fans of kongs but there are many members who fill kongs with treats or veg and freeze those too. Another option is to fill or half fill big plastic bottles and freeze those. They play with them for an age.
I do keep their bowls filled with ice cubes as well.

A paddling pool is a very good idea, if you dont have the room could you fill the bath with cool water for him to get in ??

Blue has his own idea, it's called jump in the canal and then come home and stink the house out

Wetting the paws, ears, inner legs and belly will help to cool him down. Soaking his whole body may actually cause him to heat up more.

Re: keeping staffies cool.
Apparently you can buy Sulphur from the petshop to place in their water. It aparently cools the blood. I've never tried it, but some people have said it works xx

I freeze sardines in a container full of water overnight for her treats.. Cooling the belly helps keep them cool so if they have access to tiled areas like the kitchen or bathroom to lie on the cool tiles is a good idea as is a damp towel and a fan for them to sleep on, as you are in an apartment I can't suggest the wading pool unless you think it is a good idea to flood your place

We use a cooling colar when out for walks and make sure to not go out during the hottest parts of the day

25 is a nice winters day here
Chiquito has a cool mat - doesn't use electricity or water and is great in the car when travelling in the heat. He lays about on it in the house and has been known to share it with my feet on occasion

Paddling pool and ice blocks when he is home alone have worked well for him too.

Re: keeping staffies cool.
Haha Kell was just going to say the same, this Summer has bad here most days well over 30. We used the aircon a lot, and Oswald enjoyed a lot of frozen fish
Do you have a link to the cool mat? I would love to get one for next year

The link I out in my post is the same one that I have - I actually managed to find it in Homemart for a lot less than it is advertised on the internet for though (Well worth the money if you can't find it cheaper though!!) There are a few different versions that are similar that I have seen, this seems to be the most robust of all of them though.

Re: keeping staffies cool.
PS .... Also should say that it is easy to clean - you just wipe it over and can use a disinfectant if needed without damaging, which was the other reason I really liked this one over a lot of the others I looked at
