Quick Question About Feeding Empty Quick Question About Feeding

Post by CaraElizabeth Wed May 01 2013, 03:39

Hi all!! So Gwen is now 4 1/2 months old! She is doing great all around we are so proud of her! We are currently feeding her 3 times a day. I was wondering if at her age we can now go down to feed her only twice a day?? She is doing good with house training, still some occasional accidents which are our fault. The reasoning behind switching her to being feed twice a day is because I feel it will be easier to predict when she needs to potty. Most of the time we get her out and she goes in the right spot..we take her out very frequently (every hour and a half) SO my question is, is it okay to start feeding her 2 times a day or should we continue to feed her 3 times a day until she is 6 months old? Thanks guys! Smile

Quick Question About Feeding Empty Re: Quick Question About Feeding

I think it's best to wait until she's six months old, really, and just keep an eye out for her circling or sniffing, signs that she's about to go to the toilet. We did have the same problem with us not opening the door fast enough for Loki Laughing

Quick Question About Feeding Empty Re: Quick Question About Feeding

Six months is generally the time to reduce to 2 meals a day. Then some will reduce further to one meal a day at about a year old. I keep mine on 2 meals a day for life.

Quick Question About Feeding Empty Re: Quick Question About Feeding

Post by CaraElizabeth Thu May 02 2013, 02:33

Okay I will keep her on 3 meals a day until she is 6 months old as orginally planned! I have always followed this ( 3 meals a day from 8 weeks-6 months then 2 meals from 6 months on..) but i have never really known the reasoning for this! Maybe someone has the answer to why you feed 3 meals until 6 months? As in why is 6 months the right time to go down to 2 meals a day??

I've always fed 4 meals a day from 8 weeks to 12 weeks, then 3 meals 12 weeks to 6 months & then 2 meals.

The reason they need to have frequent meals is the rate of growth! They need so much food to fuel their rapid growth that they wouldn't be able to take in enough in one or two meals when they're very young. Obviously as they get older their growth rate slows and so you can cut a couple of meals out.

Quick Question About Feeding Empty Re: Quick Question About Feeding

We give Otis his total daily amount in 3 meals. Do you have to reduce down to 2 Caryll, or would 3 still be okay at 7 months?

When we got him at 12 weeks he was on 2 meals a day, which we quickly found out wasn't suitable and changed to 3.

If he's still enjoying 3 meals there's no reason why you can't leave him on three. Just be careful you don't overfeed - a fat dog isn't nice! Sad

A lot of dogs seem to regulate themselves & go off one of the meals at some point.
