Quick Question Empty Quick Question

Post by otisthestafford Tue Jul 23 2013, 15:39

Whilst out on a toilet walk with Otis he picked up a snail Crying or Very sad  he didn't swallow it or chew it as I got it out pretty much as soon as it went in. Just wondering if he could be at risk from lungworm now? Or do they actually have to ingest them? I think the snail was dead aswell...

Sorry to be a worry whale

You can't possibly know that!

I daresay he will be fine, but a dog doesn't have to eat the snail to get lungorm - he only has to lick at the slime trail! Do you use a lung worm deterrant such as Milbemax?

Erm we use Drontal every 3 months he is just about due now but we were holding off due to him starting antibiotics. We did ask the vets as I was concerned about an interation between them and we were going to query the next worming in 2 weeks.

Ok. If he's picked up lungworm, it's too late to prevent it now.

I hate Advocate & don't use it, but in this instance I would ask your vet if he recommends the use of Advocate in your area re: lungworm.

Advocate is used to treat lungworm - Milbemax is used to prevent lungworm.

As I said, the chances are he's perfectly ok - not all snails have the lungworm larvae - but your vet will know what the chances are in your area.

Rang the vets - the nurse is going to ring me back and thinks that we will potentially need to treat him, so an appointment for 6.20pm - Oh Lord today has been testing to say the least what with sickness and snails!

Thanks again Caryll for your help Smile

Evening Smile just an update I rang the vets and just to be on the absolute safe side we are giving him advocate.
The vets are going to be sick of me ringing as I have rang a couple of times this week over one thing or another lol!
