Surprised Debo's new habit-not happy.

Post by jola139 Tue Apr 23 2013, 12:04

So Debo is still same friendly DEbo. To everyone and everything. I'm really happy with that,I couldn't ask for more but..... There is one thing I'm not happy about,it's really annoying. When Debo is on the lead and someone say something to him he goes all soft, tail wagging, puppy eyes etc. TRy to get to that person and when that someone won't come to say hello or I stop Debo from jumping on that person,he starts to bark like mad. And many Times he scared people away. I'm not suprised. There is that dog barking like crazy and me saying "He only barks to say hello". Crying or Very sad What to do? Please help.

I'm not sure what you'd do, to be honest. The barking is attention-seeking or frustration for not getting his own way, but not sure how you'd deal with that except to not give him any attention at all until he's quiet and calm.

Yea I agree with Tara it's probably a combination of wanting attention and frustration about being on lead and not being able to do as he wants.

Logan barks at certain dogs he doesn't like, I know it's not exactly the same situation, I use the "look at me technique" where when I see the dog approaching I will lift a stick or a toy etc and get him to sit and look at me until the dog/owner passes then give it to him and praise him. It would work even better with high value treats. Smile

The watch me command is great. With new people that's all I can suggest. If it is someone you normally see explain to them the issue you are having and ask them to ignore him until he is calm.

There is one guy that Suki barks at like crazy. If she is off lead she will run at him barking. I don't know why but she still does it everyday. She usually knows he is coming before I do as well

Thank you all. What I do at the moment is when he starts his crazy dance I take him away and back when he's calm.

Agree with everyone else! Give him a tug or a noise like "ah, ah" when he barks (I use with ebony) to calm him down, make him sit so he can watch them past reward him for being quiet, but be very firm and don't pay attention to him when he's barking as it seems like its's attention he wants!

I knew it's attention seeking but some people get scared.
