Horrible habit.......
I have had to stop letting Lily off the lead and having a run as she can't keep away from poo - and she's not fussy where from - horse, fox, other dogs. She will roll in it or grab a mouthful and run. She didn't do this when we first got her but this has developed over the past few months. Its such a shame as it was great to see her running free, but there you go. Apparently it can be quite common but doesn't make it any better and I don't see a way around it. We haven't changed her food and its a quality food so it can't be that.
Does anyone else on the forum have a dog that does this?

Re: Horrible habit.......
Moo has never done it, but yes I have seen a lot that can. Maybe try a flexi lead, be one step in front all the time and teach a strong leave if she goes near it, it may take a bit of time but does work as they all have the instinct to do it but with training they will learn Xx

What Janey says, really. You've just got to try & be one step ahead.
Dempsey will eat almost anything from any animal, so we've learned to watch him like a hawk!

Re: Horrible habit.......
The long training lead may well be the answer to this and a good Leave command, other than that try to stay away from places where poo will be ???

Re: Horrible habit.......
Just got to be vigilant, ella will eat poo sometimes so a stern NO! or Leave it! as she approaches any poop does the trick

Re: Horrible habit.......
My brothers dog does it , not eating but rolling in fox poo , it's horrible to wash out and really stinks .
I think I would try a long lead . Sorry I can't help more.

Daisy did with horse poo at first but I've told her no and she seems to have stopped bothering with it, so there is hope!! She will however pick up food from the pavement.... Burgers, pizza etc, she even found the remains of a spare rib once!!

Re: Horrible habit.......
Molly is terrible for this if she gets the chance, same will eat any poo: horse, duck, dog, cat.
We have taught her the leave command and generally it works unless she thinks she is far away enough she can get away with it.

Re: Horrible habit.......
Hehe Molly loves poop lol sheep, cow, horse, rabbit.....
She knows the leave command but, as above, if she thinks she is far enough away she takes a mouthful and runs! Little sneak.
Unfortunately they've just put manure all over the fields where we normally walk... joy!

Re: Horrible habit.......
Thank goodness Steff has never had this habit, I have the weakest stomach when it comes to eating grose stuff

Re: Horrible habit.......
Some people say that it's due to a defficiency in certain nutrients, but most dogs just like the taste of poo. Dempsey loves it.

I've caught Ebony once or twice trying to eat cat poo! Luckily I can tell when she's going in for the kill as she stares and licks her lips and starts to gallop over to it! So I can usually tell her "no" before she reaches, thank god she listens other wise they'd be no kisses for Ebony!

Ledger will on occasion with cat poo it has taken a while but his body language is slightly different when he has located something to eat (beit poo or discarded food) against when he just wants to put his scent on a spot. Rabbit poo must also be a delicacy my parents dog (springer/collie x) goes crazy for that
