Looking for help or advice
Hi my names Alex I have a 9 3/4 old male staff called paddy love him to bits as I do all staffs, I've had staffys since I was a child and wouldn't consider having any other dog. I'm looking for help or advice if someone could point me in the right direction it would be appreciated. My or my dogs problem is over the last few months he's become more unsteady on his back legs and seems to prefer weeing like a bitch than cocking his leg, when he does * his leg he is very unsteady on them and as for his weeing he seems to be struggling or more forcing it out an stays there for longer weeing. He's always had a hop skip n jump kind of run since he was a pup cos of his back legs for some reason they seem stiff when he runs or walks, he doesn't seem in pain at all when and I've had him fully checked at the vets ie blood, urine, and joints which where all fine the only thing was his prostate seemed a little enlarged or so the vet said so I tried an anti inflamitry medicine which made no difference. The vet has advised to try an injection to lower testosterone to see if this works an then neutering him if not, I'm considering having him neutered as I just think the vet is just wanting more money out of me. I wish paddy could just tell me whats wrong as he's never ever had any problems and apart from this is a very wealthy dog so any advice would be very welcome, I can post pics of paddy if any one would like. Also he's never been sexually active (poor sod) would this cause any probs? Thank you in advance Alex

Re: Looking for help or advice
Hi and welcome from Me n Steffi I'm sorry I can't really offer any advice I have never experienced these issues, though it sounds like something is not right, have you considered going to another vet??
Never being sexually active shouldn't cause these problems, not that I have ever heard of anyway. Sorry I'm not much help but I'm sure someone will be able to offer some advice soon..

Welcome and let us know what the vet says. Sometimes things just "go" as they get older as well.

Re: Looking for help or advice
Hi & welcome.
If his legs have always been a been a bit stiff, then it could be the patellas (knee caps) that are to blame. However, if he has an enlarged prostate then that will need seeing to, and sometimes the only way to rectify it is to castrate. The reduction in hormones that'll result from his medication will indicate to the vet if castration will do the trick.
He could also have a touch of arthritis, which can be eased by regular meds, so speak to the vet about that next time you're there.
If you trust your vet I wouldn't bother getting a second opinion, as it sounds like he's doing everything he can at the moment.
