Chronic extremely watery stool...

My 6 1/2 year old American Staffordshire Terrior has chronic extremely watery stool that's been going on for about a year now.... Appetite is the same, energy level is the same, I can't pin point one thing that is different other than the stool, I have recently noticed that as it's getting colder she seems a lot colder now but assume it's the weight loss that has occurred w/all of this...

Currently she's on a sensitive diet food, w/a pro biotic, that isn't helping... She's been a long list of different dog foods...I've mixed fresh pumpkin in w/her food & it helps a bit but she doesn't always want it & they say too much isn't good either so I don't stick to that very often.. She has had the Metamucil mixed in her food, no luck. Also gave her shots at home of vitamin B that did nothing..We did steroids at one point that in turn made her urinate in the house so at one point I was coming home to urine & watery stool in my house daily.. . She had a non invasive surgery to see if she had any liver problems or anything else that could be seen, nothing... I feel that my vet has tried a million things & NOTHING has worked...This is going on a year now, I'm not sure if it's time to switch vets & start all over?? I've been told that whatever this is that she has may shorten her life expectancy b/c she's not getting the proper nutrients from the food, I'm not ready to give my little girl up, so I'm doing my own additional research! I'm at a loss, I just don't think the only answer is to feed her cooked chicken & rice for the rest of her life there has to be SOMETHING...

I contacted my breeder to see if he has any problems & he didn't really have any answers either, suggested maybe joining a chat room, so here I am... I love my "little" girl (she'll be 7 on the 23rd) but I can't keep going through this mess & making her go through it... She feels so horrible when she makes a mistake in the house but she just can't help it!?!?

I'm not sure I can be of much help. Could it be that she devolped an allergy to an ingredient commonly found in dry food?

I can sympathise with you, although not to that extent but it may help that your not totally alone.

When I rescued Moo she was haveing diareah overnight every night, I was at my wits ends, as I am sure you are. I took her to the vets so many times and her healh tested for everything, but to no avail as every test came back clear.

This went on for weeks and I was so tired of waking up at 3/4 in the morning cleaning up poo off a carpet, and the smell was terrible!

I ended up covering the bathroom with newspaper and just had to put a baby gate over the door so at least it was easy to clean overnight.

During this time I swapped over her diet to royal canin sensitivity contol food wet/dry mix, which basically is just chicken and rice. It helped so so much, and after a few months of being on this her poo still wasn't perfect, but better.

After a few months I swapped her over to a all dry diet, which again improved things, and after nearly 3 years I have got her on fish4dogs, which seems to suit her perfectly.

I know this isn't a solution, but just thought it might help that your not alone, and time and finding the food that suits will improve things in the long run.

The food I have her on now is still new so I want to try it for a month or so before I give up on it, good news when she went out this am this was more formed & not just liquid!! Sorry if TMI!!!

How distressing for you and Peanut...hope she shows some improvement for you.. you are certainly leaving no stone unturned... she is lucky to have such a caring owner!

If all else fails, you could try swapping her to a raw diet. If you feel you'd like to go that route, just ask here & we'll do our best to point you in the right direction. There are a few of us on this forum who feed raw.

hi you can add a little bit of arrowroot powder to food as well just to help out a bit with the firming up.
hope you are turning the corner with the problem but as said by others please keep us informend

I had a bulldog with a stomach like that. Finally figured out he couldn't handle chicken, duck or fish which are common in most of the foods you have fed. Finally found he worked on Canadae Lamb and Rice. Took me about a year to figure it out. It's hard, but hang in there!

That's true. My own Dempsey is poultry intolerant. He can't eat any chicken, turkey, duck or any bird at all! They go right through him & give him very watery & sometimes bloody stools!
