Lesson Learned
Ok so I learned this morning that leaving my keys in my handbag is not safe enough! Was woken up at 6am by a tapping on the dining room window, rushed downstairs to find my son stood at the window, asked him what he was doing and the reply I got... "I'm just checking on Lyra, she needed a wee so I put her outside" !!!!!!!!!! Lucky for him our garden is secure with a 6ft fence!! Not so lucky for him was the lecture he got about not doing silly things and putting Lyra in danger. Will now be sleeping with my keys and one eye open!

Re: Lesson Learned
The thought behind it was sweet, tho the reality not so much lol. He's 6 in May but going on 16 atm! He loves to help as much as he can with Lyra, so much that his mothers day card said "for mothers day I will help you by walking Lyra so you can have a break" bless him he was very annoyed that I wouldn't let him take her out while I had a rest

Aww, bless him, what a thoughtful boy!
He doesn't realise how silly it was - just being helpful.

Janey, they are the best of buds I like to think they are ganging up on me sometimes
Caryll, you are totally right he couldn't understand why I was freaking out a little bit (prob due to the fact it was 6am and absolutly freezing cold outside) I don't think Lyra will be so quick to follow him out if he manages to do it again

Re: Lesson Learned
I shouldn't laugh and I totally agree with you Dee but he sounds so much like my son who turned 6 in January. I'm having the temper trantrums at the mo with him. But him and honey are the best of buds too. When we get up in the morning she will sit with him on the sofa snuggled up together before school. If he isnt down she will sit at the bottom of the stairs waiting for him. She can't go up I have a stairgate due to the cats being upstairs

Ahh Kaz I know what you mean. It seems to be something in the water with all the boys I know atm lol. I love the little bond that is forming with Lyra and Connor right now. She cries when we leave the school in the morning and she goes crackers as soon as I say "come on time to go get Connor" lol

Omg I feel exactly the same about honey, especially when they can't control theirs or when she greets another doggie and she is so calm and chilled And so you should feel like that

Re: Lesson Learned
Aww well done Honey Lyra is still at the oooh if I like the size of you and you come up to me when I'm on the floor I will get up and jump on you stage lol. But my favourite thing of all is that she will sit lovely outside the school gates with me waiting for lil man and the only time she "forgets" her manners is when people let their kids come over and fuss her without asking grrrr. Its my pet hate, because she's very much a kid pup and she will jump up given half a chance. I think there has only been 1 person who told her lil girl to ask if she pet her before coming over. Felt like hugging her lol

Re: Lesson Learned
Yes I agree that's totally wrong they def should ask. Not every dog is as friendly as ours. I also try to say to the child or parent that they should never touch her head they should give her chest a tickle. It can be seen asa sign of aggression to a dog. Not that they all listen and then they would moan if something happened.
Awwwwww bless her.

Re: Lesson Learned
When other people greet your dog or puppy for the first time they should go for the chest not the head. I read it somewhere, I have a few dog books that I am reading. Especially for a child, they should not be in the dogs face but under on the chest, this is seen as a good sign. I noticed this while out most people go for the head and the dog lifts its head up to follow. I now encourage children to touch her chest when they say hello to her.
I also watched my sister the other day and she went straight to honeys chest. She has got two black GSD, they are about two. But she has always has GSD.

TBH iv never heard before, we have always taught ryan how to play with tyke what not to touch were to be carefull etc me personally couldnt imagine not letting ryan touch tykes head as the tend to lay together and ryan will lay and storke his ears and head. Its probs the correct way but in away i prefer tyke to know that ryan can touch his head good thing to care in mind tho?

Re: Lesson Learned
Rebecca I think when I read it it was for the first greeting. I've taught my kids to touch honey in most places on her body so that she is used to being touched when she goes to the vets. My sister and a very close friend told me to do this.

Re: Lesson Learned
Lol I had to go and check but there are a few bits on the web about touching the chest too.
Dogs don't know whether our intention is good or bad. Touching the head doesn't help their vision and they can't see what you are doing. They also say that it can make them nervous and especially for an abused dog they will see it as a sign of attack. This is not for your dog at home but for those out there that you will meet and others. And for those adults and children that will want to greet yours. The chest is a far better option and usually they suggest with the back of your hand. They won't be so nervous because they see your hand.
I'm not saying anyone's dog is aggressive please don't think that. I was just thinking of those kiddies who are so desperate at times to come for a cuddle. I have asked every parent with a child when they ask to touch honey that they touch her chest. It makes them calmer and there is a bit of trust there.

Re: Lesson Learned
Wow I'll defo have to put that into practice (especially at the school gate with those head smooshing kids lol) I had a woman today say to me, as Lyra was attempting to jump on her child, "its ok she's used to it, we've got a dog" I just calmly told her that I was training Lyra not to jump up at anyone as people think its cute now that she's only 5kg but it will be a different story when she's 15kg+ and knocks someones child on its bum. Don't think she really liked that really / lol

Re: Lesson Learned
Dee Some people just dont understand with their dogs do they? I don't like Honey jumping up either. I usually make her sit before anyone comes up to her. I've quite often given a child a doggie treat to make honey sit too. Maybe the lady is happy for her dog to jump up all the time but that's not how everyone is
