Stupid owners grrr
So I have just got back from our morning stroll and am very annoyed.
We walk from fields onto a cycle track and there is a gate that seperates the two. I always lead our two up and make them sit/stay as I climb over first, often cyclists coming on the track, then they come through the dog bit at the side.
As i had just climbed over the gate a border terrier and boxer dog came runing through the dog bit to get to my dogs, first they attacked Watson I hadn't got a clue what to do nor had poor Watty. I told him to run away and dropped his lead but this stupid dog kept going for him, Watty was trying to get to me but was blocked by said dog. As this was ongoing i heard 'watch out for your dogs, hes nasty to other dogs' then the boxer started growling and made poor moll cower and started trying to hump her. I grabbed their leads and pulled my two via their scruffs backwards through the doggy gap next to the gate. As I had them next to me, on leads, the silly owner of the aggressive dogs was running about trying to get control of his dog as it kept trying to attack again. I had to grab the boxer by its collar as it went for them again, it was a huge dog.
He said 'sorry, if i'd have seen your two I would have put him on the lead he just tries to attack any dog he sees. The amount of times I've had to apologise to people...' Surely if your dog is that DA you would have to keep them on a flexi lead equivilent if you have no control?
Grrrrrr silly owners!

Re: Stupid owners grrr
You have had a rough time on walks lately How are your two after the fox traps?
I agree with you wholeheartedly about non dog friendly dogs being off lead. There is no excuse for that and it really makes me angry. Logan is good with most dogs because not so good with others. For that reason he doesn't get off lead. I have training leads and flexi leads and they give plenty of space for roaming.

Its more the fact that he actually said how much he'd had to apologise for his dogs, that I wouldn't believe the number of times he had to say sorry. ermm yes with that display I would!! My parents have a mastiff cross with no socialisation skills (beaten and battered rescue but lovely now) and hes not agressive although barks alot and hes not off lead. If you know your dog attacks, i think it takes things one step further.
And dogs much better after traps (thank you!) and no snares being used anywhere on land anymore. We had a meeting with the owners. It was a tenant of theirs who had put the traps down. I've been up there alot since to check it out and no traps.

Glad to hear it! The story made me think a lot about how these things can happen and you really can't be too careful. Glad they are ok tho

Me too. I would have thought snares were illeagal but after much research unfortunately they're not. Lots of legislation governing their use.... but perfectly leagl to use these indisciminate killers! I understand foxes need to be controlled (another topic for debate I'm sure!) but using snares is just barbaric in my opinion.

Re: Stupid owners grrr
They sure don't.
A puppy spaniel was recently attacked and killed by a DA dog that was roaming off lead, such a sad story. Its only a few miles from here and they haven't managed to identify the dog/owners responsible.

To be fair, our old Boxer was dog-aggressive and he was always let off the lead, and he never in his life (with us, anyway, since he was a rescue) so much as got the chance to growl at another dog. If your dog's recall is good then there's no problem. The problem in this case is that the owner would rather let his dogs off the lead and hope he sees a dog before they do, than improve their recall or keep them on a long line or extendable lead. Stupid. Poor Molly and Watson, they haven't had a great time recently, have they?

You are right there Tara. If recall is good there's no issue at all.

Re: Stupid owners grrr
Surely if you know your dog can be even the slightest bit DA you keep it on a lead, a bit irresponsible to let them off the lead when you cannot see who or what is ahead of you on a walk.
Glad to hear the situation with the traps has been resolved.

Re: Stupid owners grrr
These dogs we met had no notion of recall seemingly. He was running around after them.. I just think if you know your dog is DA then you need to be able to control it, recall training is good but what if that one time they choose to ignore you and go for the other dog?
That is where flexi leads are great. Or fully enclosed areas where you are definate there are no other dogs nearby!

Re: Stupid owners grrr
People are silly sometimes and ignorant of others, i have just taken Cassie for a short walk due to her spaying when i walked around a corner and there was teenage lad with a great big brown dog it was dragging this lad towards Cassie at speed, i screamed because it scared me and shouted to keep it away, a complete over reaction on my part i know but i was scared and Cassie is recovering, luckily enough the dog was friendly and the lad said a lot are scared of his dog because its a bull breed. I told him it has nothing to do with the dog it is about being unable to keep the dog away when asked he couldn't control it. He called me a moaning old girl dog, his parents must be so proud of their creation

I would not have been able to help myself I would of had to replied are you stupid? You know your dog is dog aggressive yet you let them off lead in places your likely to come across other dogs? Pure stupidity!
He states how many times he had to say sorry, erm hello sorry is no good when a dog is dead or seriously injured due to his pure stupidity, I would of had to give him both barrels direct to the head personally.
I am sure he would not be to impressed if one of your dogs had enough of his dogs and they both attacked his. Yet by the Law its him who would have done wrong you had your dogs on lead and he did not, he also did not have his dogs under control. In fact with the new laws that are being put in place (Not sure its done yet) he actually already broke them.

Both ours are not dog aggressive at all without cause, but would only take so much aggro before retaliating, I had to pull Molly off my step dads Jack Russel just a few days ago because Jake (My step dads russel) kept going for Molly and she decided she had enough and went for him and not in a nice playful way at all.
