Introducing staffy to baby
Sorry if its in the wrong section! not sure which one to put it in.. we have knew a month or so now, that my wife is preganet, very early stages! but just wondering how people go about introducing their staffy to the new arrival....
sam wouldnt be too bad, jealous wise, though when my mums staffy was a pup an u had it in ur arms, sam would have jumped up to get some attention, not in a bad way, Im sure he will feel abit out when a baby lands home, like anything I suppose, course ur going to be abit jealous / out of place,
I also know the staffy is nicknamed the nanny dog as its great with children,
my child, whether it a boy or girl is going to grow up loving sam, and staffys in general, not to mention animals...
thanks any info appreciated!!

Re: Introducing staffy to baby
I have heard a great tip is when Mrs has bub and is still in hospital, take one of bubs worn singlets and give to your dog so they get used to the scent of the new addition.. When bub is home make sure intro is done gently and on lead, and make sure Sam is taught early not to jump up to the pram, cot etc. Personally I would make sure he is taught that the nursery is out of bounds unless he is invited..
By the way Congratulations!!

Re: Introducing staffy to baby
congratulations!!!!
when i was pregnant with ryan tyke would lay with me and he always rested his head near my bump which i encouraged as well.
in the mean time, socialize as much as poss round babies, toddlers etc tyke was taken around any child we could find haha
when baby is born take some muslim or a soft cloth and put with baby, then take home for sam so he can smell and get use to this.
when baby home show him his new brother and sister, try a long walk before hand so he not giddy. then you just have to go from there. we would let tyke come and watch us bath him or when i was feeding him tyek would snuggle up aswell. when we had ryan on his mat tyke would come, lay and sniff his hands and feet.
aslong as you dnt banish him and let him interact there should be no jealousy
good luck

Re: Introducing staffy to baby
First of all, Congratulations!
I have recently been through this myself, my lad is nearly 6 months old and Leo LOVES him to bits.
I would echo everything that has already been said, let him know the babies scent so he is not too 'shocked' when you bring the littlun home. I would also suggest letting him have a gentle sniff when you first bring the baby home. (obviously make sure you have a hold of his collar, i wouldn't put him on lead as he might feel a bit strange being on lead in the house, or he might think he is going on a walk and get excited)
You need to let him know from the very first moment that although he is still very much loved and an integral part of the family, there is now another person above them in the 'pecking order' within the family. How i did this was to hold Oliver whilst stroking Leo, sounds simple but natural state of Oliver being higher than Leo helped emphasise the fact that he was above him.
I would also suggest that you split your attention. If someone is giving the baby attention, make sure someone is also giving your dog some attention.
Everything i have said here worked perfectly for me, and they are now best friends. Oliver loves it when Leo even walks past him and gets the proper giggles when Leo lets him stroke him.
Best of luck with it all.
