Chicken Wings and Drumsticks
Who feeds there dogs raw chicken wings and or legs/drumsticks?
I have just come back from the vets and they have told me to stop giving him wings altogether. The vet is 100% behind the raw feeding diet, but she is worried about the chicken wings. I think she has seen a few too many cases of blackages caused by wings.
Has anyone stopped feeding wings completely for this reason?

If your dogs not used to them, then you need to hold it so he doesn't just swallow it! My 24week old pup gets them regular, she gets duck wings aswell!
I wouldn't say anything to my vet about raw feeding unless they asked for a specific reason what they were fed! My vet knows I raw feed and has stopped trying to get me to change to IAMS

Re: Chicken Wings and Drumsticks
Our vet is really good. When I mentioned that I was looking at switching Brutus to a raw diet, her eyes lit up and she went on and on about how good it will be for him. Especially as we couldn't get the issue with his skin sorted. Since swapping him to raw, she noticed the change in his skin and his general health and is always asking after him.
Having said that, she is concerned over the chicken wing side of things. He does chew them, maybe two to three crunches and then down the hatch.

Re: Chicken Wings and Drumsticks
My vet is against it to and said she knows of cases where chicken bones had caused a perferation in the bowel . I asked her if this was raw or cooked and she couldn't answer that.
I do still worry a little but my pup does great with the drumsticks and takes her time with them and eats the lot v easily .
When her jaws get bigger I will change to larger pieces of chicken so she still has to chew and not just swallow .
I am going to stick with the raw because she loves it and I am sure it will be great for her.
She only does two small poos a day that are just the right consistency and she has 4 meals a day ... Just shows how little waste there is

Re: Chicken Wings and Drumsticks
Brutus is the same. He does spend a bit of time chewing and he knows when to chew more thoroughly as I stand next to him and tell him to slow down. He has picked it up that he has to chew more rather than woof it down.
Sarah, your avatar picture is quite funny as we have the exact same of brutus, right down to the blanket.

Re: Chicken Wings and Drumsticks
Chicken wings and drumsticks are fine to fed, as Stu said, if they gulp them down then it is best to hold them to make them chew..
Paul, anyone who feeds raw would be aware that raw meat should always treated the same as meat you would eat yourself.. You wouldn't leave it out, always freeze it etc.
Sarah, I would think they would be cooked.. NO cooked bones should ever be fed Vets get paid to promote certain "brands" of food.. Most vets have no real knowledge of ingredients of most foods.. They just know that they get a commission if the brands they stock are being sold.. They will always recommend what is on their shelves

Kylie : I agree , they were probably cooked but you can see how vets can put people of raw feeding ...to be fair our vet wasn't trying to promote any one food.

Re: Chicken Wings and Drumsticks
My vet was mortified when I told him my 2 are raw fed!
He was disgusted - so - I changed vet practices and we have a lovely lady vet that adores my 2 and supports raw.

I did the same thing, my original vet told me that feeding raw will make my dog vicious and have the taste for blood so therefore it would make her more likely to attack people Seriously what a douche and the bag it comes in Needless to say I never went back to that fruitbat My vet now does support raw feeding especially in Staffs as he said if it agrees with the individual dog, it can vastly improve many skin conditions that staffy's are known to often have..

Re: Chicken Wings and Drumsticks
Strange that your vets reacted that way. I've not met a vet yet that has any issues with raw. They have said to me, make sure he gets all the necessary requirements, but they fully back the idea and feel that if you have the time, brilliant. I must admit, I noticed how good his coat looks and also the skin problems have almost disappeared.
I gave him chicken thing and drumstick his evening. No chicken wing in the freezer. He gets so excited over food that he actually starts to whine if not fed before 7:30!

Re: Chicken Wings and Drumsticks
Yep my vets are horrified about me feeding raw and we had a massive argument about it, lets just say i won!
But i feed all parts of chickens to my boys even chance who is obviously a lot bigger then a staff and he crunches once and down it goes

Re: Chicken Wings and Drumsticks
Is there ever too much of a good thing? Brutus has had heart for three out of five days this week. Can he have too much red meat? Today is shopping day so we will be getting a load of chicken, quail, possibly turkey, tongue, etc.

Re: Chicken Wings and Drumsticks
Some dogs to react badly to too much heart, but only because it's quite a rich meat. If he does ok on it there's no problem at all!

Great, thanks Caryll.
Well today we ended up getting chicken wings, gizzard, breast, ox tongue, lamb kidney, lamb heart and lamb brain. I'm assuming brain is ok?

Re: Chicken Wings and Drumsticks
Red meat and wild game are much better to feed then loads of chicken etc so yes it's completely fine, just feed what's in your budget and what pupster can tolerate

Re: Chicken Wings and Drumsticks
When I started feeding Blue he was on hearts 4-5 times a week. Now he has been eating raw for a while I am trying to get as much variety for him as possible. Blue was fine on hearts, in fact in just a week eating raw hearts from commercial food you could see a massive improvement in his health.
Like already said some dogs are fine but if they will eat other proteins then the bigger the variety the better.

Re: Chicken Wings and Drumsticks
Cheers all. He gets a bit if variety, but it's tough over here as we are restricted to predominantly frozen chicken, quail and duck. The fresh stuff is heart, organ and some unfrozen tongue or brain which is generally fed within a day or two. His basic daily diet consists of chicken breast in the morning, followed by a combination of heart, kidney, beef mince, quail, tongue, goat leg/hoof meat on, pig ear/trotter, egg or sardines for dinner.
