Re: bathing,how often?
Bathing/warm washing can cause dandruff.. It dries out there skin and washes out all there natural fur oils. Stop the showers IMO.

I bath Logan about once a month because he gets filthy, but even that is a bit too often. I brush him daily.

Dempsey gets a bath about 3 times a year & he thinks that's 3 times too much!
Bathing too often will dry out the skin & cause dandruff.

I bath daily... oh, but I give the dogs one when they need it (i.e glands etc). Doesn't always need to be done with shampoo if you are just trying to clean out the dirt. Shampoo is what can dry out their skin etc.

Re: bathing,how often?
Too many baths/showers will strip the skin and hair of it's natural oils and dry out the skin causing it to be dry and flaky. A vicious circle really, stop the baths.

Re: bathing,how often?
you should bath as little as possible and if they need one try and just use water, unless they are particually stinky

Re: bathing,how often?
i bath with dog shampoo 1-2 times a year, every two week is far too much and as every one explain can cause dandruff and dry skin.

Re: bathing,how often?
I only bath her when she REALLY needs it.. I used to wash her a lot and her skin and coat was terrible, she ended up with lots of rashes..

Re: bathing,how often?
Solly is never bathed, unless he has rolled in something unmentionable, to neutralise the smell of s..t rub some tomato sauce on the offending area, it really does work. If he is muddy give him a good rub down followed by vigorous brushing. Shampooing is just not natural, and dogs like to smell like dogs not like human beings!!!!!! I'm sure that smelling of perfume or medicated shampoo can cause confusion in some dogs, maybe thats why they like to have a good roll on the grass or some muddy area after a bath. Gets them back to smelling normal again.

Re: bathing,how often?
We probably do ours 4 times a year roughly.
Washing that often sounds like whats causing the problem IMO, though if your not 100% sure check with a vet, do you have special shampoo for this condition then?

We don't bathe Suki more than twice a year or so. We do wipe her down with a damp cloth if she gets dirty though

Re: bathing,how often?
When we got Jango we bathed him yesterday, but didn't want to push it, will bath him again this week as when we got him he stank and it hasn't gone away yet, spoke to a vet who said to use baby shampoo as otherwise it strips the PH balance and oils etc. after that, once he is smelling at least near decent it will probably only be if and when we need to. So probably a few times a year or if he is particularly stinky or dirty.

unless he gets filthy you are doing more harm then good, even if his coat is ok to much washing will strip the natural oils from his fur which is there to protect it

I have recently bought Bob Martins antibacterial rub downs as an alternative to bathing - but haven't used them yet. Has anyone on the forum used them?

Re: bathing,how often?
I try not to wash my dog but if she gets incredibly dirty I just wash her off with just warm water; if she's smelly and dirty I brought some hand made dog soap which has all natural ingredients and smells lovely and she's never had a problem with coat condition sometimes I just rub her under her belly and legs with a towel which also does the job!
If you've got a smelly pooch and you don't want to wash her or she's not dirty then you can get dog "perfume". The one I use is called velvet coat, I use the one with the Labrador on the front as I think it smells the nicest you brush the fur backwards, spray then comb it through and it leaves them smelling lovely and promotes a healthy glossy coat as it replenishes all the natural elements needed to keep your dogs coat healthy and shiny I think some sort of product like that would be best (not every day though!) just to kind of help the coat along and brushing along with it will help clear the dandruff and excess hair as well as adding natural oils, a lovely smell and glossy coat!
We also use it at the kennels I work at for after they've been bathed and groomed!
