Latest DEFRA report to Parliament
Things could turn out very badly for staffy owners:
"The Dangerous Dogs Act should be amended to enable the Secretary of State to add other types of dog with particularly aggressive characteristics to the list of banned dogs as required."
Oh dear...

Re: Latest DEFRA report to Parliament
I hope not, but it doesn't help that so many attacks on the news are either from staffies or dogs reported to be staffies.

Re: Latest DEFRA report to Parliament
If anything it could be good for us. It would bring staffies to the fore if they were mentioned, and it wouldn't take long to dispel the myth that they're evil vicious things.
And if they did try to ban them...well, they might suddenly find a mob of staffies at parliament - tongues at the ready.

I cant see this banning any other breeds while they cant enforce, it silly even talking about it

MPs call for changes in the legislation to give the Secretary of State powers to extend the banned list to include other dogs with particularly aggressive characteristics. At the same time, MPs want the Government to give those tasked to enforce legislation the discretion to neuter rather than destroy a banned animal where there is clear evidence that a particular dog poses no threat.

Wont happen, its just aload of fat gits in grey suits puffing feathers...defra did the consultation with the people that know about dogs and they know who to listen too. What they are suggesting is unworkable and this is what our taxes are being spent on... People that know jack * spouting anythjng that they hope will win them votes....even there dog death figures dont compare to bee sting deaths each year...hang on...banbthe bees there real killers i tell ya!!!

Wow Nathan I just checked and you're right. There were also more people killed by 'other mammals' during that period. So cows, horses and the like are more dangerous than dogs.

Re: Latest DEFRA report to Parliament
Wonder how many MPs are staffy or staffy cross owners.
They won't bad staffys or staffy crosses.... If they did that would be one heck of a countrywide cull.
Responsible ownership guidlines - and enforcements are needed but feck knows how they'd do that.

Re: Latest DEFRA report to Parliament
I'm begining to wonder how big this "dog problem" really is. if we encompass everything dog from beeding to abandonment then yes we have a big problem. but the only part of the dog problem MP's seem to want to address is the relativley small incidents of dog aggression because it hits the headlines.
Its all smoke and mirrors, by there wording they want tougher laws and the ability to add more "aggressive" breeds to DDA section one. Well if they take the figures from the press it would be banning alot of bull breeds and larger dogs. If however they look at the true statisticts of dog breeds most likley to bite and therefore be more aggressive we would see alot of the most popular non bull breed dogs disapear from our streets.
And to go further and work out the statistics per breed over its percentage of the dog population alot of our bull breeds and larger dogs would be far from being added to section one.
I agree that there is def a problem with society and bad dog owners but I also think that the general public has been blinded by the press and dont really understand anything about dogs and there behaviour.
The press have instilled a fear into the public which the MP's have picked up on and have started to bang there drums about it.
What annoys me most is that they think they know better than everyone in the last consultation defra carried out and I bet they havent even read any of it.
They spoke with vets, behaviourists, trainers, wardens, police dog handlers, dog charities etc etc ie people that know about dogs and the outcome after summerising it all? adding private property into section three DDA and compulsary chipping... Nothing about adding any further breeds to section one.
the very very sad thing is they are doing nothing about the true plight facing dogs of today. theft, abuse, poorley trained, negelected......etc, etc
sorry for the long post, i needed to vent

Re: Latest DEFRA report to Parliament
Just looked it up and the 210,000 dog injuries a year also include tripping on a dog, dog knocking somebody over when playing, etc.!
