deer antlers for dogs
Do any of you give them to your puppy? I have read that they are great for your dog and also the flip side they can give the dog upset tummy.
What's your views?

Re: deer antlers for dogs
not heard anything about an upset tummy or experienced any problems myself , Tommy has had one since a pup ( he still has the same one now so they last very well )

Re: deer antlers for dogs
Bacchus has had his from the day I got him so I can't see how the tiny amounts they chew off at a time could give him a tummy upset. I massage a little peanut butter into the ends as a treat occasionally. I also alternate between the Stag Bar, Bento Ball and Kong stuffed with sweet potato.

I've given Zeus deer antlers (Stagbar) since I've had him and never had a problem. There the only thing that last long and unlike rawhide, you don't have to worry about small pieces coming off and getting lodged in their stomach, you can leave them unattended with it.

Logan has one and its great. He has always had very good teeth but since he got his stagbar his teeth are even more pearly white. He does get bored of it though.

Kodas had her stag bar for about 6 weeks and she loves hers and still havnt really made a mark on it unlike her previous chew toys so I think it will last a while and I've only heard good reviews on them nothing about upset tummys

They're brilliant. Last a good while and give them something to do. Loki's had them since we got him. Took him a while to bother with it because it has no taste, but put some peanut butter on it and he was nice and happy. He likes to settle down for the night with it

Skye loves them. One will last her about a fortnight which is fantastic for her. Her teeth are always lovely and white and has never had an upset stomach from them.

Re: deer antlers for dogs
i have a small deer antler which i found in the woods. would it be alright to give to buck if i took the tips of the points off? (theyre pretty blunt anyway)
id give it a good few soaks in boiling water first to get rid of any nasties.

Give it a good scrub with hot water (it won't need soaking) & it should be fine. If the points sren't sharp I'd leave them on - just make sure he's supervised when he's chewing it!

Really? Wow! We buy the large ones too and I've known some only last a week... But never more than a fortnight lol. We're lucky though, she's never chewed anything around the house. Probably because we spend so much money on chew toys etc haha.

Same with Bacchus he hasn't damaged the house at all and he has his stag bar, bento ball, kong, nylabone and hooves from PAH. Poor deprived wee soul.

Dempsey's only just realised that he can actually eat the stag bars. He's slowly wearing away at one of his oldest.

Not 100% sure. It was so long ago but I think it was medium ( orange ) one.

Apparently if you soak them overnight in cold water it makes them more appetizing!

Re: deer antlers for dogs
Just remembered to dig the antler out that i found in the woods years back.
Gave it a good wash today and ive just handed it to buck. I wasnt convinced that he'd be interested but antlers must be like catnip for dogs. he took once sniff, sntached it it and legged it into his bed and is now contentedly gnawing on it. i didnt even have to use the peanut butter method!
thats saved me a few quid and bagged me some peace and quiet in one fell swoop :p

Stag bars are great value for money they last Rocky for ages. He will usually have a chew of his last thing at night and send himself to sleep virtually still chewing it.

Best thing I ever bought for my honey. She loves them. I bought two. Had them two weeks so far and hasn't gone through them just yet. I'd been giving her nylabones but they are not so good now she has her bigger teeth. Will carry on buying the stag bars
