Micro Chip
No, not Fries To Go!
At last, after 3 years of saying I'm going to get it done, the Dempster has been microchipped!
He HATES the vets with a vengeance, it absolutely terrifies him, so it's been a bad day for him. He yelped/snarled when the nurse did it, and then wouldn't stand still when she was trying to scan it to prove to me that it works!
Then, to top it all, on the way home we came almost face to face with his arch-enemy..........THE BIG RED STAFFORD!!! And when I say big, I mean very well built & heavy! This is a dog we often pass on my way to work & they always eyeball each other & then both kick off to extreme. Well, today, Dempsey was already in a bad mood & there was no way I was going to be able to walk past this guy without some serious damage (probably to me because he's have tripped me up!). Luckily the owner's pretty calm about it all & he took one look, smiled & shook his head & then picked up his stafford so that he could walk past! It was hilarious in a way. A woman walked past looking very wary of both of us, and we (my daughter, me & the other guy) just laughed while Dempsey was doing his best "Let me kill him" impression!
Poor Dempsey's crashed out on the sofa, very very sorry for himself now.

Re: Micro Chip
sam got a walking arch-enemy, he can stop his brother a miles off all his hair stand up
Re: Micro Chip
Still giggling at the funny snarl at the end.
He randomly shook his head mid-snarl and sent spit flying everywhere.

Re: Micro Chip
What is your problem with micro-chipping? What if your dog got lost, stolen? Its a must and I really do not understand why we have to wait until 2016 for it to become compulsory!

Re: Micro Chip
Every step helps. Personally think a larger fine should be installed, £500 is nothing compared to how many dogs that are in shelters.

Re: Micro Chip
I've always been in favour of chipping, but I've just been lazy I suppose. No excuse, just kept putting it off.
I think it's a very good way of getting your dog back if it does get lost somehow, and even the best cared for & obedient dogs sometimes run off.
Each to their own, of course. I don't think chipping will do anything at all to stop the amount of dogs in rescue or the amount of dog attacks, but it's a good way of keeping track of your own dog!

Re: Micro Chip
I say the same about Dempsey, but there are always exceptions, situations we haven't thought about & can't plan for.
I'd just prefer to be prepared & know that if he gets lost & scanned it'll get back to me.
Also, insurance is often cheaper!

Re: Micro Chip
I've never thought that chipping would change the amount of dogs in rescues neither have I thought it would stop dog attacks on people, but as a means of identifying a lost dog, yes. Although I also think that people should be allowed to tattoo instead of chipping if they want. Not in the ear - ears can be cut off ( ) - but on the inside of the thigh. Then a national database could cover both chipping and tattooing.

Re: Micro Chip
I've never been against chips, but wasn't convinced they were the best (or only) way forward. At first I wanted to get him tattooed - I'd heard some horrible stories about chips migrating around the body, but they seem to have sorted that out now. But there's no doggie tattooist near me, and the law is going to say that chipping is the only legal thing.
I'm still not happy with a foreign body being injected under his skin, but it seems the only way now, and I want to make sure that he's traceable.

Re: Micro Chip
When Loki had his done, he was so happy that the vet was making a fuss of him that he literally didn't notice, same with his needles. Ah, he's so easily distracted . Well, least it's done now, Caryll, Dempsey's probably already forgotten the traumatic event . None of our dogs have ever run away, but you never know, always better to be safe than sorry, in my opinion.

I think we were all reluctant to chip him at first, because he had too much loose skin around that area. The chip might have migrated. Now that he's all filled out, it isn't so bad.

Re: Micro Chip
The rescue centre Rocky came from do all the animals that are re homed as a matter of course. If not we would have had it done anyway, the alternative is unthinkable should he somehow get lost.

Re: Micro Chip
Both mine are chipped but it doesnt make them go any faster
Skye had hers done as a pup with her first jabs and didnt even flinch skye even has her chip number on her KC registration
Buster came to us chipped and all i had to do was change the details and even his name i also added his kc reg no. to the form ( i found it to easy though and no info was asked of his origonal owner although they did say he had not been reported as missing)

Re: Micro Chip
Im one who is Anti-chip, nothing wrong with anyone else getting them, i just wouldnt-seems like a waste from what i hear.
the chips very rarely stay put, especielly when the dog is young, the chips often are lost within a few months and need a new one re-implanted. not to mention if the vet or shelter scanning your dog doesnt have a universal scanner (some smaller shelters dont) then as far as they are concerned-the dog has no chip.
I would much rather tattoo and use a good ole fashioned dog tag.

Re: Micro Chip
As for the chips stopping the amount of dogs in shelters thats rubbish. I got chipped to get lexi back, and if she wasnt chipped i would be phoning every pound in the area until she was brought in. People who don't care won't do that. And that is why dogs are in shelters, it not cause they are not chipped.

Re: Micro Chip
Glad Dempsey has forgiven you Caryll
Here in Queensland (not sure about the rest of Australia) it is now compulsory to have pups chipped before they are sold/given away, so Chiquito came to us already chipped.
Because it is so common here (being the law will do that I guess) all vets etc have a scanner, and the system is used by rescue centres, vets etc to track owners ... if you find a dog you can take it to your local vet and they will scan the chip, check their records and do a ring around of other vets in the area to check if they have the dog on record as well. This helps to keep dogs out of the pound/RSPCA, who besides the obvious concerns of over crowding etc, also fine owners who have their dogs handed in.
