Re: Dempsey
can you tell me what is the standard size and weight for a English bull terrier
Guest- Guest
Re: Dempsey
There isn't one. The standard just says maximum substance for size. So you could get a bully 15" tall or 20" tall; 60lbs weight or 90lbs weight!
The reason all the interbreed pups are registered as minis is because of PLL (primary lens luxation). Pll isn't in standards, but it's a problem in minis. So if you breed a mini to a standard, some of the pups could be affected. Therefore, if you registered the larger ones as standards you could introduce PLL into standards.

Re: Dempsey
It's only size & weight that there are no limits on. In practice you'll find that they're all a similar size. Lots of variation, but within a narrow limit if you see what I mean. The all important things are 'breed type' and substance (not fat!). Like the stafford, the bully is a 'head' breed. If the heads good, then your 40% there! A lot of emphasis is placed on general soundness. Movement can be a bit hit & miss, though.
Something I've always had a 'beef' about is that in most standards they call for the rear legs to move 'parallel'. However, if you look at ANY dog (wolf included) as they trot, the back legs slope towards the centre line of the dog for balance! So you'll often read in a critique "moved close behind".

Yes, although if there's white present (as there usually is) there must be over 50% colour, preferably with even markings.

Re: Dempsey
Dempsey caught a rat tonight. Shook it like a rag doll & killed it outright. Then he just dropped it & carried on with his walk!

Re: Dempsey
Caryll, your Dempsey is magnificent i really wanted a English bull when i lost my 1st staff but after a bit of research decided on another staff and got Samson, like you said earlier there a very different dog, and while i'm typing this Samson is laid flat out on the bed watching x factor who's the daft one
Guest- Guest
Re: Dempsey
Hahaha!
Yes, anyone who watches x factor in my opinion is daft!
A little addition to the rat catching espisode............ Dempsey caught a cat.
It was one that attacks everything that walks past & has gone for Dempsey in the past but I've always seen it first & prevented any problems. But this time it was sitting just inside a wall & as we walked past it shot out on its back legs slashing at Dempsey with its claws. There was nothing I could do, Dempsey had it by the neck in half a second & was shaking it while I tried to get him to let go. Not easy. After about 15 seconds (seemed like 15 minutes) the cat squirmed free & ran for it.
Dempsey finished his walk with a couple of scratches on his nose & a very self-satisfied air!!

They're around £900 for a pup. I would say for £1500 he's been done, someone saw him coming! Trouble is, if you're going to a good breeder they often have a waiting list so people who've been waiting for a long time get restless & are prepared to pay more.

Re: Dempsey
Well worth it .. he is a gorgis looking guy ano a boy with one not sure how much he paid were its from etc think its more of a dont ask anything about it lol but his is gorgis mad thing runs about usin its head to bang into gates fences alsorts lol

Re: Dempsey
Yes, that's about it - the only thing they don't use their heads for is thinking!
Dempsey is 18 months now & still hasn't worked out that the garden gate opens inwards! Head butts it every time.

Re: Dempsey
I have to admit, i'm not a fan of ebt's, but Dempsey is gorgeous. Where did his name come from Caryll?
Guest- Guest
Re: Dempsey
A love them a love anything that no one else has and is different ..thats why kuma is the colour's she is couldn't just be normal
Guest- Guest
Re: Dempsey
I absolutely love Kuma's colours, she is gorgeous. I dont like the head on the ebt, and they look mean when they're mad. My husband loves them tho and wanted one. I'm glad we got Charlie instead. I do like Dempsey's colours tho and he looks like a very good natured boy. He's the nicest looking ebt i've seen
Guest- Guest
Re: Dempsey
Hahaha! Looks are deceptive! He's a real pain at times. He's named after the heavyweight boxer Jack Dempsey. My husband liked it. The coincidence is that the breeder named him Frachadem Thrilla in Manila, which was the name given to a famous Mohamed Ali fight.
He's the most dominant dog I've ever had & there have been times when I've wondered whether we should have got him, but then he can be so sweet & gentle & loving & I'm glad we did. Not that I could get rid of him now, he's part of the family, in fact he was from the time we first saw a pic of him at 3 weeks old!
I agree that the head's strange, but you do get used to it, and I can now see beauty in them. It took a while to get used to it after being so used to the staffy head. They don't look any more mean than a staff does when they're angry. Before you got to know staffs, if you'd seen a pic of an angry one, it would have scared the s**t out of you!

Re: Dempsey
Hmmm, maybe i should've looked at more pics before settling on staffs.... No, def made the right choice. Each to their own and all that. I've read that ebt's can be incredibly dominant and stubborn, I wouldnt take on a breed like that until I've had a few more years of experience. I know you've had a fair few tho so I'm sure he knows you're the boss!

Hmmm, I wonder!
Yes, they are a very dominant breed, but Dempsey is one of the worst - even some of the seasoned owners I've met have commented on that. Right from day one (literally) he was incredibly bold. Nothing scared him, not even a long train journey & introduction to a new home. He takes just about everything in his stride. I think it was because he was hand reared for the first few days (he couldn't suckle) and he nearly died. Because of that he was handled a lot by the family who bred him & he really got his own way!
Having said all that, he's also a clown & makes us laugh.

Re: Dempsey
So I'm guessing he's a total pain in the butt but worth it all? You gotta love em, even when they're driving you up the wall! (lets see if I'm still saying that in a few weeks time! )
Guest- Guest
Re: Dempsey
Yup, you got it! Wouldn't swap him for the world!
Ask me again the next time he refuses to come back when he's called, or the next time he grabs one of my soft toys & I have to chase him round the house to get it back.........................

Re: Dempsey
Clumsy? Oh, hell, yes! Bandit was clumsy & used to trip etc, but Dempsey can't seem to remember how wide he is, either, so he'll try to turn around in ridiculouslt tight places & gets really frustrated cause he has to keep going till there's space to turn!
