Dog washing
Out of interest , how often do you wash your dogs ?
Do you have a regular routine or is it just as and when?
The reason I ask is, we only washed our Taz when he was muddy or a rinse when salty from the sea and he had a lovely shining coat (that may have been food related though) , but as we are hoping to show our new addition I think we may have to get into a regular routine and wash more often....do you think washing weekly would dry their coat out or cause them irritation?
Thanks
Sarah

Re: Dog washing
Washing them often can cause skin damage I think. I've only washed Loki once, and that was just to get him used to water. Hasn't had a bath since.

Re: Dog washing
For me it's Cassie that dictated no shampoo, she scratched, rubbed on the wall and just seemed mad the next day

Re: Dog washing
I have only washed Ledger a couple of times when he has been covered in mud or been in the sea, general muddiness he stays in the front room and lies on towels/an old duvet cover until he dries and is then brushed

Re: Dog washing
Laska has only had one bath and Marley hasnt had one since he last blew his coat and that was only to help get the hair out. They seem to do a pretty good job at cleaning themselves up which is amazing considering the state they get into sometimes

Re: Dog washing
When I showed I used to wash with an Oatmeal shampoo a week before & then just give a good brush & shine with a spray on conditioner (John Paul Oatmeal) on the morning of the show & then again before he went into the ring.
Now, Dempsey only gets bathed when he gets too smelly for us to stomach it any more!

Re: Dog washing
There aren't any exact guidelines to tell you how often to wash your dog. Most people just do it when their dog gets too dirty for comfort.
Having said that, if your dog has access to muddy fields, ponds, etc, she'll probably be too dirty for comfort a lot of the time. In that case, you might consider using a hose to get rid of excess mud, and then brush the rest out. Bathing too often can cause irritation and skin/coat damage.

Re: Dog washing
Rocky only ever gets a rinse in plain water, would only use shampoo when really needed, dont want to strip his coat/skin of the natural oils there.
