Need some advice
Hi I'm looking for advice for my first staff. Alice is 9 weeks old and I got her last week she is booked in for her first jabs on Wednesday. I can't wait to be able to take her out she has so much energy.
I was wondering what training works best, she is very stubborn and won't do anything unless she wants to (she won't even do things for treats). She has learned sit but will only do it when she wants to the rest of the time she will look at me as if I'm crazy. I also have her sleeping in the crate at night and if I have to go out she will also be happy staying in it now. What techniques have people used for the stubbornness. Also I was told by a vet that when she is older i will not be able to trust her off lead around other dogs, I can't see why not though if she is properly socialised my hope would be I can take her for long walks with my jack russel who I will happily let off the lead so he can play. He knows he has to come back to me and not go to far. Thanks for all advice

Re: Need some advice
They normally respond very well to positive reinforcement (ie praise and treats). Keep training sessions short, around 5 minutes or so and try to end on a high note.
As long as she is socialized she will most likely be fine around other dogs off lead. There are some that are simply dog aggressive no matter what you do. The more types of dogs, people and places she gets to interact with the more socialied she will be. This should be done daily if possible.
Also make sure that the dogs are introduced on lead first.

Well I've already started taking to the park with me when I walk my other dog, I won't place her on te floor so I've carried her so she experiencing new sounds.
I just don't want to start on the wrong foot with her I have always loved the breed and I hate the negative opinions people have of them.

If she hasn't had her first jabs yet I would wait before taking her out. Her interacting with your other dog is a good start until she has had her shots.
Also be aware that they do tend to play on the rough side and some can be very voclal both of which can be unsetteling to some people. Here is a link that will help you distinguish between play and aggression. If you are in doubt step in and seperate them, let her calm down and then start over.

Re: Need some advice
After reading that it makes me a little less worried about the noise they make while playing. They have started to learn that when I say no when there getting a bit rough they both instantly stop look at me and then walk off in different directions only to return to the game a minute later. Should I just let them play in this way. I have also been making sure I have play time with both of them on their own.

Things will get so much easier when you can tire Alice out with proper outside fun

I would definately let them just keep playing as long as you are comfortable and the body language is kay. Since she is a pup she still has to learn bite inhibition and what behaviour is acceptable. It will also help tire her out until you can take her for a walk.

That is a pretty silly thing for them to tell you. A lot of Staffords are fantastic with other dogs. Look at the amount of people on this forum you have more than one dog. Logan is excellent with about 95% of other dogs but is not afraid to bark/growl back if another dog is misbehaving. Enjoy your pup, don't believe the scaremongering. Once you can get out and about and enjoy walks and playtime you will see a massive improvement.

Re: Need some advice
We found that training with treats while out walking worked well followed by 10 minutes of more training with treats inside on a night. Just walk normally then call the dog back every time the dog comes give a small treat. On the evenings we make our dogs sit and wait then walk backwards also sit give paws law down roll over. It has worked on our first rescue dog as she will do everything with no treats. Dylan on the other hand is proving a challenge he is only just learning to wait etc. Although he waits at roads and will sit etc. The main thing with training is to repeat for months till they learn.

Re: Need some advice
I've started trying to call her when in the house and when she comes I give her a treat, 9 times out of 10 she will come to me it's just the odd occasion where she just ignores me what I have noticed is when I call my jack russel over she always runs to me I feel she thinks she's missing out on something. One question when we can go out is a collar or harness better for her?

Re: Need some advice
I personally prefer a harness as I feel a lot more secure when Logan has his on and it stopped him pulling. However, some people find that it has less control. If possible try both. Since she is still a baby you will only need lightweight collars/leads/harnesses.
Bare in mind she will out grow everything very quickly lol!
From the fact that you are already crate training and practicing your recall etc I think you will have no problems!
