Leaving Billy
Hope you can help.
My hubby and youngest son are going on holiday for 2 weeks at easter. Me and my eldest son are not . Normally Billy is never left on his own during the day or night as my husband works weekend and I work during the week.
So for 2 weeks Billy will be on his own during the day and we are trying to find a solution cause he is still only young, we have 2 options at the moment, which do you think is best, or can you give me more options.
1). We leave him at home in the kitchen/hall way with his bed, food and toys and employ a dog walker who comes in to take him out during the day.
2). My husband builds him a large kennel in the garden and we leave him out there with food, toys etc.
I would just like to do what is best for billy, with the least disruption possible.

Re: Leaving Billy
I'd go with the first option. I know a fair few people who use dog walkers and they swear by them, leaving him in the garden, depending on the area you live in could be asking for trouble, people may see him and think that'd make a lovely pet for so and so.

Re: Leaving Billy
i would take him out for a good walk before you go out leave him with plenty of things to chew on remove anything that you dont want him to chew on because accident can still happen because he only young.
Re: Leaving Billy
thank you everyone, we do have a crate which he sleeps in at night. Would you lock the crate ? sorry for the stupid questions

Good advice.

I'd lock the crate personally. How big is it? Does he have plenty of room to turn around & get comfortable?
I'd also get him used to being locked in for a while before everything changes, otherwise he'll be howling and your neighbours won't be happy bunnies!

Re: Leaving Billy
I would lock the crate as it is the first time, the one and only time I left it unlocked for Milly she shredded a rug. And as Caryll says I would try him a few times before everything changes. Milly normally sleeps when she is in her's we take her for a good walk and then she is ready for a sleep. Plus I no she is safe and the house is. I always make sure she does not have her collar on.

Re: Leaving Billy
Hi Lynne
I've just gone back to work 6am to 12 noon and Hollie is locked in her crate without her collar on, plenty of water in her bowl and loads of toys. She's been absolutely fine, and she's only a few weeks older than Billy.
Try leaving him for short lengths of time first and gradually increasing it until he's being left for the time you'll be at work, then you'll be happy to leave him knowing he'll be ok.

Just try balancing that with the thought that he won't be able to chew your furniture, walls or wires. The wires are the really bad thing - that could cause a fire!

Re: Leaving Billy
Billy Is only 10 days younger than charlie and from an early age I left charlie in his crate with toys and bedding so he'd get used to it. He's always been fine with it. As others have said, as long as you start getting him used to it now, he should be fine.

Re: Leaving Billy
Moo is way older but its been only up to recently she has been left in the house, a crate will ease your mind when leaving him and I have a dog walker who comes in about 1ish (walk her at 6 b4 work and then when I get home)
Holly does look happy btw!

Re: Leaving Billy
They won't usually wee in their bed, and the crate will be his bed. Hopwfully, as long as he has a good walk before being left (and maybe get someone to come in & walk him for a few minutes?) he'll be ok.

Mines £15 and she does about 2 hours and feeds her for me (although I get it all ready in the morning) I thinks its anything between £10-£20 but find a good one cause some I've seen some that can walk 6-8 dogs at a time which I don't really like. Although Moo is socialable so its ok. I found mine at the local vets

Re: Leaving Billy
that seems quite reasonable, i have someone in mind who is the mother of my sons ex girlfriend, she is a professional dog walker and she is really nice, but I wanted to know approx how much before we spoke - so i did'nt make a fool of myself.

Re: Leaving Billy
Understandable, I was really worried and luckily I don't have to use them too often as my mum helps and I can't really afford it, but its great you have someone in mind cause I didn't know anyone

Re: Leaving Billy
Bruiser is left in hes crate 3 days a week from 9am til 3.30pm and hes completely fine, at first he would wee in the crate, but obviously when they are so young they cant hold it well.
I get up at 6.15 and i give him hes first feed and he i then has the run of downstairs and the garden to go toilet for an hour why i get ready for work, when i leave he goes back in the crate. When my partner gets up he takes him on a 20-30min walk then he gets put back in the crate til 3.30pm.
It definatley works for us, we usually throw in a kong to keep him occupied aswell
i used to worry at work if he was ok, but when i got home he would be soundo!

Re: Leaving Billy
Think that looks bad. I used to have one for our last dog, a boxer called Sandy. It used to be in the cupboard under the stairs as we never ended up using it. But for some reason my autistic daughter took a liking to it. But not until she has strpped naked and then she would lock herself in it.
I swear I would of got 50 years if social services come round and seen her. Can see the headlines
