Car Sickness Empty Re: Car Sickness

Post by Nathan Thu Dec 27 2012, 16:01

Alot of puppies get car sickness (motion sickness) as they are still developing balance in there ears themselves. He should grow out of it pretty quick as he matures. there was a pup at marleys puppy classes that was always sick in the car but by week three he'd already grown out of it. I had no trouble with Marley at all but Laska had the problem at the other end so whenever she went in the car I had to cover the back seat with newspaper. the worst bit was helplessly listening to her trotting about in it after a foul smell engulfed the car sick

start with very short car rides and make sure they are very exciting ones (to the park etc) Is it nervous sickness or travel sickness. We found Tilly didn't like the car so much but made sure she didnt travel in the back alone and lots of fuss and she's fine , though she still gets a little stressed and pants a lot . Tommy was like a duck to water

try giving some form of ginger before you go in the car, like a ginger biscuit or crystallized ginger if they will eat it Smile

I would recommend ginger chews for travel sickness or any upset tummies for that matter. We always have a box of these in our cupboard:

Have the same problem with Bacchus. Unfortunately he has had to have a couple of fairly lengthy journeys recently (2.5 hours at a time ).
We always try to make sure not to feed him for several hours before a long journey to avoid vomiting but he drools constantly to the point that bath towels in his crate are saturated.
We are currently trying Dave's recommendation and will see how he goes.

You may also want to try a thundershirt, I have heard of very good results from using one:

Had the same problem with Zeus when he was younger, the first 3/4 times he was in the car, he was sick.

I then started off by sitting in the car when it was parked up, just to get him used to it as he was pretty nervous while it was moving. I did this a few times, and I also went on very small 5/10 minute journeys to the park etc, to get him used to it.

After a few weeks, he was fine and now he jumps in the car as soon as I open the door for him!

I didn't believe in giving him supplements for it, just give your pup some time and he'll get over it, its simply the case of him not knowing whats going on, once he gets used to it, he'll be ok.

Car Sickness Empty Re: Car Sickness

Post by HoneyBear Sat Dec 29 2012, 00:38

Our Puppy honey got sick initially in the car. I never knew dogs can get car sick- it makes sense now! But, I was so worried that I took her to the vet. After a full exam and close monitoring and another car trip we found out this is what it was. We were told to take her in the car with lots of attention and praise every couple of days for very short trips slowly building it up. Since, she has got much better! fingers crossed this continues to work and I wish you all the very best Smile
