Pulling on lead
Hey all. Poppy is coming on for 14 weeks now and has been getting out for walks for the last week since her final vaccination
Now i'm the first one to comment when i see someone walking with their dog on a lead and the dog is away pulling in front pulling its owner along....so i'm on here for a wee bit advice on the best way to avoid this myself!
Poppy can be a stubborn wee thing, she does well with her commands and will do near enough anything for a treat so i'm lucky in that respect but i'm having a wee bit bother when out with her! If i'm being honest its as if when i take her out she's just that desperate to get back home that she pulls, well tries to, the whole way! I've tried the stopping and walking the opposite way thing....doesn't work, praise when not pulling,,,,doesn;t help a great deal...so what other options are there?? Thanks x

Re: Pulling on lead
I just found that it just clicked with Moo, we had her on a harness (mum walked her and felt she had more control), I just used a collar. Just takes a bit of time and patience really Xx

Re: Pulling on lead
Ella was the same up until about 5 months, which is when I bought her a harness. I find it gives me more control of her, and she responds very well to my commands. I make her sit at every road crossing, and wait until I give her the go ahead. If anything, Ella is the opposite of your dog - pulling all the way to the park/beach as she loves it outdoors and her ball games. If she digs her heels in, and continues to pull; I just sit her down and that frustrates her even more and she learnt very quickly that she was delaying her own fun. Try the harness and persist with your commands, I'm sure Poppy will soon be a joy to walk.
Oh, I got Ella used to the lead indoors too; saved alot of those 'I don't like this/I'm not moving/what are you doing to me?' moments out in public

A harness may help but the turning around method will work with time and patience

Yes, some pick it up in a few days, others take a few weeks, but it usually does work. What exactly do you do with the turn around method?

Re: Pulling on lead
I would be lost without my harness. Collars for a dog that pulls are very dangerous, so i would get yourself a harness. You might find that she pulls less but it is not a garuntee.

Re: Pulling on lead
I know its controversial wiether these things help but my Puppy was exactly the same and I hated him pulling and was worried about his neck so got a harness reccommended by our dog class lady and its really good - when he pulls it it tightens a comfy strap around his chest almost like putting a hand infront of him with no give at all, within 2 walks he got the message that he wasnt going anywhere if he pulled and cant reccommned these enough!!

my pup is 6 months and still fits into a small size
however I do understand why people say harness can encorage pulling but not many harnesses actually have the (humane) stopping power
