Teaching puppies how to fetch??
How do I teach my 2 puppies how to fetch? They are 6 and 8 months and distract eachother constantly
One of them can fetch a football but she doesn't bring in all the way back and the other doesn't fetch at all.
I want the to both play fetch with me but when I'm playing with the one that can sort of fetch the other one just sits there and I want the both to join in.

Re: Teaching puppies how to fetch??
it will come eventually they are young so need teaching. Might be best to teach each one seperately then no distractions. Just throw a ball not far and give the command and show them where the ball is. I thought all dogs had an inbuilt fetch in them though

Re: Teaching puppies how to fetch??
my boy has just learned how to perfectly and hes not even 5 months, but then again he doesnt have a distraction.. Its basically rewarding them for picking it up and walking with the ball and then after a while rewarding them for bringing it to you. After a while it becomes 2nd nature.

Will try teaching them seperatly... hope it will work
It's mostly the older one that needs work..

Re: Teaching puppies how to fetch??
my little fella is only 12 weeks old and we have managed to teach him to play fetch, how i did it was everytime he brought the ball back i gave him a treat! and now he will pick most things up and bring them back lol, if i drop a sock he picks it up and brings it just keep trying and he will get the hang of it! but id try teaching separately, if im stood at my dryer or washing machine nero will sit at the side of me waiting for something to fall so he can pick it up lol, i think a little bag of treats in your pocket would help aswell. we are just trying to get his recall up as he just likes to run off on the back garden and wont come back in lol

Mine is 8 months and does it perfectly... I think he would be happy doing this all day if he could!! Teaching him it was easy... the drop it command took a bit longer. I started in the house with his favorite toy and built up from there. I now have a flinger and can throw it about the lenght of a football pitch... he loves it!

Re: Teaching puppies how to fetch??
Lexi has never got fetch. When i got her i had a lab who loooooooooved fetch and would do it all day, she would run after him and eventually when she got bigger she could catch him and get the ball off him, but she never got the "bring it back" part. She just runs after it then runs away, but 9/10 she just ignores the ball being thrown and tries to climb onto you lol
