Re: Teaching a puppy to play fetch
My dog brings it back, but really doesn't feel like dropping the ball/toy for us. We've tried the treat method but he very quickly decides he doesn't care about the toy anymore and just wants treats. Hopefully someone posts something!

Jett never brought it back.I started giving him a treat when he picked the ball up then after that I moved on to tapping my leg and giving him a treat when he brought it back. Then tapping my leg and when he brought it back i said "fetch" after 2 weeks he got the hang of it now when i say fetch he brings it back.

Practising in the house and using the toy playing fetch as a training treat seemed to work well for us. Also practising on a long 15 meter lead helped too.
Molly still gets distracted sometimes now she will get to the ball and decide actually I wana sniff over here or eat a pine cone or chase off after a bird ect.

Re: Teaching a puppy to play fetch
Moo's fetch is great and its a very good game to keep them active. She just sort of fell into place doing it, never really had to teach her. With dropping it she used to be a pain, if you try and take it out her mouth she automatically thinks its turned into a game of tugsie so if I tap the floor in front of her she'll then drop it. Be persistant with it and have simple command words and hoefully (not definatly as previous said) she hopefully will just pick it up!

Bruno has got good at fetching the ball in the house but he doesn't like letting go, but i am a bit naughty, i put my fingers in his mouth and put a little pressure on his tongue so he can't move it then he lets go of the ball, but sometimes with just have a game of tug of war with a ball

Re: Teaching a puppy to play fetch
I let my lot do it naturally just like other commands, when they sat i said sit, when they layed down i said lie down, Taz and Blondy wanted to play with me so they would bring a toy to me and i would say fetch and reward now they both fetch.....Cassie on the other hand only recently after owner her for over a year i got her to give me her paw so fetching is out of the question for her.

Be careful taking from a dogs mouth this is unatural and it can make them want it more (because you took it without being polite in the dog way of thinking) and lunge forward for it. He should learn to leave it when you say so this is polite behaviour for both of you, after all you, wouldn't snatch off someone.
try to teach the drop command or leave it command, hold up a treat to their nose wait for him to drop the toy then say your command and reward.
