Weight/condition.. Empty Weight/condition..

Post by Rachel33 Wed Dec 05 2012, 10:55

As some of you know Biscuit had a bout of sarcoptic mange about a month ago and it hit her immune system pretty hard, her weight and general condition went really downhill! Her coat's almost back to normal now and the weight is going back on, I thought she was almost there but a friend saw her last night and seemed really shocked at how she was looking?! Sad

Just wondered what you guys think? As I see her everyday and it's hard to spot minor changes. She's not a pure bred staffy and is generally a little more athletic looking, at the moment she weighs 19.5kg but she's generally around 21kg.

A few photos, sorry they're a bit cr*p still haven't taught her to stand properly Rolling Eyes so had to get food involved Laughing

Cassie looked the same as Biscuit but i could see her spine a little when we got her and i felt she looked like she could do with a bit of weight on. But you can't see Biscuit's spine and she looks healthy enough. How do you feel about how she looks or starting to look

Have a look at this chart - http://www.villagevetpa.net/sites/site-4143/images/dog%20BCS.jpg

Looks like a 3 to me, if she keeps eating and exercising will likely get back to 4. I wouldn't worry if I was you.

She looks a little thin compared to way she was, but I wouldn't be unduly worried. Better the weight she is, than fat! She certainly doesn't look skinny/unhealthy! Love Struck

I always find this chart quite useful when trying to gauge if a dogs weight is about correct. Just click on where it says enter, then click on the dog, the first little picture:

According to that chart Bis would be thin, but to me she looks ok - maybe could do with a little bit extra, but not much!

Ah thanks guys you've put my mind at rest Smile I've been road walking her a lot more than usual due to the dark evenings so she's doing about 5-6 miles a day plus plod around/sniff time and 3+ hour hikes on my days off so might need to feed a little extra more to compensate..

Also, Caryll, I've been trying to work out her cross since I got her but nobody's ever been able to come up with anything! You know a lot about the various bull terrier breeds, what would you say she's a mix of? I was thinking just two bigger staffs but she doesn't really look much like a proper staffy?

I've always thought she looks like a (rather large) full staff! Terrier type, maybe, but all staff. Maybe her parents were just big 'uns! Big Grin

Oooh okay that's interesting, a bully breed lady that I used to work for also said she thinks she's more terrier type! Just always get the idiot "pit bull" comments from people, which she is very clearly not! (Not that I have anything against the breed of course, I love them, just don't want her to be getting labelled like that..) I grew up around short stumpy little dumpling staffs Laughing so she looks very different to them! Think she's just a big chunky butt!
