running away when off lead
Hi all we have had our Miley for 7 months now. We never let her off lead for a while after we got her. She was from a rescue centre and was due to be destroyed by the RSPCA when the rescue centre took her in. When we first let her off lead she was very excited when in the company of other dogs. She will run to them wherever they were even if they were on the other side of the field. She will not come back when called etc and will only do so when she has either finished with the other dog or we go to get her. She has also run out the gates of the park and dissapeared up the road holding up a line of cars which was embarrassing to say the least. This has happened one more time when she was on the field she dissapeared again this time crossing the road and going home. She then ran back to the field and managed to step on a piece of glass which cut her paw. We are so worried we wont let her off lead any more. We did try and tempt her back when off lead with dog treats etc to no effect. Because we dont know her background we dont know what may have happened in the past. We were told she was a stray found in Rochdale thats all we know. She is a very loving girl and we dont want her to get hurt or knocked down on the road thats why we keep her on a lead but we also feel she isnt getting a good run and are worried about her excercise. At present she has 3 walks a day over 90 mins in total

Re: running away when off lead
Try using a long line until you're sure she'll come back! You can get 30' ones for a reasonable price on ebay. Just let it trail, but make sure the end is always within reach. If you call her & she doesn't come back you can pick the line up & reel her in!
While you're at the park, put her on the ordinary lead for a few seconds several times during the walk - that way she won't associate you putting the lead on with her fun ending & going home.

Thats a good idea we will look on ebay now and try and find a lead. We will also take her short lead with us on the park.

Re: running away when off lead
50 foot lead ordered off ebay are these training leads ok to use with a flexi extending 7 metre tape lead or would just a normal lead be better?

Re: running away when off lead
I'd just use it on its own & carry the normal/extendable lead with you.

Re: running away when off lead
We always use a long line for Suki unless she is in a closed in area. We also bring a walking kit that has her normal lead, squeaky toy, poop bags and treats to get her attention.

Re: running away when off lead
Took Miley out yesterday for an hour using her extending lead. Had a few treats in pocket too i let her out the 7 metres then stopped and called her back. She didnt come at first then when she saw the treat she was straight back and sat waiting. I repeated this throughout the hours walk and she did improve slightly. She even came back when i had run out of treats. So she got a fuss instead. We will keep working on this every walk and when her 50 foot training lead arrives will test her on the park. Not for a while though as our local park is flooded at the mo
