advice about biting
Hi everyone,
mine nine month old staffies has started biting when he gets excited, they are not hard bites just nips realy but i would like to stop this does anyone have some advice or training techniques to stop this, or is it just normal puppy behaviour and we just have to carry on telling him no! and it will stop as he grows up and matures.
thanks
paul

Re: advice about biting
By 9 months the puppy stage of biting should be over. You need to set the boundaries now. If he gets too excited and as soon as he nips give a loud sharp yelp and then ignore him. Don't play again until he has calmed right down. Eventually he will associate nipping with yelping and stopping of play and he won't do it. (which is what other dogs/pups do so it shouldn't take too long (unless he was taken away from his family very young)
Just always be aware of how excited you get him, never really really rile him up to the point he is going berserk, staffies seem to be a dog that when highly excited can nip, a lot of dogs do this but its more painful from a staffie! lol

i would say when you say no, ignore him and turned your back on him, when he calms down say good and stroke him.
But im not expert, it's just an advice.

Re: advice about biting
It's normal behaviour really but it does have to be trained to stop. Here is a link that will help.

Re: advice about biting
Great advice given and it does work with them
My daughter drives me up the wall with this. She winds Bella up then complains when she gets a bite and acts like her arm was nearly ripped off.Hayley wrote:

Lol, Karla plays rough with her, gets her totally wound up, then complains about it. She never learns.

Seems to be a child thing as My daughter Lauren is the same. Gets the dog to a state wher I have to shout... Not fair on Lexi really. She hasn't nipped yet but when she does I know Lauren will go mental. Me and my son have felt her teeth, only when we've had our hands in the way of her toys though.... Bloody hurts lol xxxx

Re: advice about biting
Lola still bites especially when I come in I turn my back and she bites my leg> I make her sit> I find if I shove her stag bar or a toy in her mouth it helps then she runs round all wiggly and waggy with her toy

Re: advice about biting
Marley still slips at 14 months when i get greated. Put it down to playing with laska and then forgetting not to mouth humans. After ypping and ignoring i managed to teach him a strict unique no command which is simply "teath" now i just say teath and turn and he stop. Its a strong word which he never hears at any othrr time so he associates it wellrather than just no.
