The New Status Dog
http://www.itv.com/news/border/2012-04-19/husky-dogs-are-abandoned/
Good news for our breed, but terrible for the beautiful breeds that will be affected. These types of dog will if badly treated be more problematic than any type of breed. There huge excercise requirements will turn even the most placid of dogs crazy if not fulfilled.
Such a shame!

Re: The New Status Dog
There always has to be a breed that ends up as a status possession it's so sad. It was awful when it was the dobes and the rotties..and awful when it's the staffs..and now huskys too

Re: The New Status Dog
We've been getting them in by the dozen for about a year now, nowhere near as much as staffies, it seems to be the blue staffs that are going out of fashion now, but the huskies also seem to be piling up. They're easy to home because they're "pretty", but rarely to brilliant homes as people just don't understand the breed. Such a shame

Hmm so sad, Huskies do need a special home, they are workes and like to have a daily job, like a routine.. They suffer badly without the right owner

The husky is certainly a dog that needs to be working all day, they would get very hard to handle if in the wrong hands for any length of time.

Re: The New Status Dog
My neighbours daughter has one and yes he is very cute but when I told her I would not have one as they require so much stimulation and walks she laughed and said well we need to get fit
So far the dog is a healthy pup and they are putting in the effort but as the weather is getting bad I wonder how much walks he will get

i would imagine they could become a ticking time bomb if not exercised enough i may be total wrong saying this but are they not a step closer to wolf than your normal domestic pet ie pure working dogs are never fully broken as need more natural instinct.
i remember about 10 years ago when stopping on a farm the farmer warned about petting his two sheep dogs as they were likely to nip as that was there job and nature

I would never own a husky unless i was into dry sleding. I feel the same about collies. They are not pets they are working dogs and in the wrong hands just turn mental. I hate when i see people walking collies and they are going berserk on the lead trying to chase cars etc

I agree here, next door to me have a collie that they are in the process of rehoming now a baby on the way because they cannot keep up with the activity level needed . They weren't doing that anyway the few times I happened to see them go out with him they were back in twenty minutes! (I'm not a curtain twitcher by the way )

Re: The New Status Dog
There's a husky nearby who gets zero walks off-lead as far as I can tell.
Also, they are a breed that hasn't been a pet for a long time (unlike the staffie), so their genes very much drive them to work, be outdoors and hunt food themselves - one of the loveliest huskies I ever met once hunted and killed 12 chickens in a day when his owner took him to a country home for the weekend. Having said that, all my real life husky experiences have been great but they are definitely wilder than staffies.

They are not pets. My OH cousin has one, they live in a 1bed flat. He's mental. You can see the wildnest in his eyes. I never trust him fully and I'm confident around the dogs.

Re: The New Status Dog
I don't get how people can get a dog without researching the breed at all, or being unwilling to fulfill its needs as a dog with specific requirements. I mean, let's face it, dogs do everything we want of them, but many owners don't give their dogs what they need. I used to want a wolf hybrid but I knew I'd never actually get one because they can be extremely destructive and can escape from gardens very easily unless they're properly secured. Working dogs need more than just a garden to run around in. I mean, look at how wild under-exercised Staffs can get. I can't imagine how much worse it'd be in a Husky or Border Collie or breed like that.

Re: The New Status Dog
my cousin has one, luckily for for husky my cousin is a fitness nut and runs her all the time and takes her everywhere... she is totally spoilt. but i have seen many huskies just wasting away as trophies not animals
Re: The New Status Dog
I have noticed more Huskies knocking about. One person said his dog got out the house and ran off for miles. They love to run flat out. Too hyper for me lol

Re: The New Status Dog
I do have some friends that have always had huskies (upto 8 at a time) but they dry sled with them and they are not pets the shame that there are so many being re-homed a chap by me just got one from dogs trust he had a young newfoundland (which used to drag him around the park) until about 6 months ago when the bloke needed heart bypass surgery and 'Buster' had to go into foster care and he was gutted that he wasn't well enough and had to let Buster go to a new home but then next thing he has a husky!!!! He only ever does/did a loop of the park (maybe 10-15 mins max) and knowing he struggled with Buster I can see how its going to go with 'Derek' I'm trying to get Ledger socialised with him and might then offer to take him when we go for our longer walks or even when we do our 5k run

Re: The New Status Dog
Yeah its a crying shame... Especialy as they have so many diferances to a "normal dog" i had too research both breads and know full well what they need. Even something like metabolism is different from normal dogs so most people have no idea what they are up against. I saw the thing about off leading...may sound cruel but huskies need to stay on lead unless fully enclosed area or they are off and with no 1 killer being rta its not worth the risk. I could go on and on about my two but to sum up...lots of walks and lots of attention. I lost both sofa arms when marley had to be kept in after his op, took seconds. If you know anyone after a husky guide them away unless they dont mind a trashed house and being out all hours walking.
