When does breed prejudice start
Would love to know because everyone we meet loves tash at the moment, she's only 5 months. Although this morning we met a man with a 5 month old chocolate labrador, he brought his dog over and they nuzzled faces and then tash went round to sniff dogs backside, the labrador growled at her (as he has every right) but the mans reaction was ridiculous, he dived into the middle of the dogs, held mine away by the collar as if she was gonna rip the puppy apart, got the leads all tangled up and then looked at me as if i was poo.

Re: When does breed prejudice start
With some people the prejudice is there from a pup's birth! I mean, his dog growled, but your dog was to blame?
I must admit that if he'd tried to grab Dempsey's collar I'd have flattened him!

i think i was too shocked to understand what had gone on, it actually shook me up. Yes his dog growled but you'd have thought tash had attacked them both. Complete over-reaction.

Re: When does breed prejudice start
A while back when we were in the park, a woman saw Loki and shouted (to no-one in particular) "PITBULL, A PITBULL!" seriously . Besides that I guess he's still a cute puppy to them...when he's not jumping and biting :\

We have been quite lucky with this as most people at our local park love Rocky. Of course there are a couple that just avoid us but on the hole it has been good.

Re: When does breed prejudice start
A parent in my kids school playground asked me why do u have 2 dangerous dogs ?
I was like 'wtf'
The usual 'staffys are dangerous *.'
Hmm but it's ur labrador that's dog aggressive, my 2 dangerous staffys are soft as *. !
It's so stereotypical, uneducated ppl react and act the way society n the media tell them.

Re: When does breed prejudice start
Hopefully you won't kat. Had a few nasty experiences with my last staffie max. He was lovely , we got him from a rescue at 5 year old and no integration with animals . His only fault was his consistent dislike of all living things bar humans:)
I always kept him on a lead and very rarely let him off.
I had a fair few instances of ' hello , could you put you dog on the lead please.
Answer " oh mines fine
Reply " unfortunately my boy isn't "
Answer well he should be muzzled
reply politely " no your dog should legally be on a lead and my dog is fine if you do that ! Besides , what happens if your dog bites mine and he's muzzled ? Max won't be able to defend himself
Replyw why should I , I told you my dogs fine!!!!
Answer . Put it this way, put it on a lead or else !!!
Reply my dogs fine!!!!
Answer I'm not talking about the dog!!!!!!
I had about 4 walks on the trot with these idiots turning up !
We have a pup now and are very keen to integrate him with all animals , so he will hopefully be ok .

Re: When does breed prejudice start
I truly hope I don't ever come across someone like that Especially on a bad day when I can have a bit of a short fuse.. Some people are just plain stupid, but it is the stupid staffy owners, the irresponsible ones that are to blame for our poor babies being "labelled" as dangerous..

Re: When does breed prejudice start
with ruby it was about the time her ears went from cute floppy puppy ears to the more staffy shaped ears, people seemed to automatically move out of her way, even though she was still a small sweet pup. she doesnt look overly staffy to me now, shes very slim and not got much muscle for a staff, but people will always avoid her.
although, we have a couple of guys who walk their old border collie and their german shepherd every night, and they have always said hi to ruby but not really seemed happy about her breed as such. 2 nights ago, their shepherd was bounding around while we talked to them, and ruby was sitting good as gold at my feet, so cautiously i let her off lead, ive never let her play off lead with other dogs even though she does so at daycare. amazingly, the guys said to us, dont worry our dog wont hurt her (nothing about ruby maybe hurting their dog) and they played for about half hour bouncing through the long grass. made such a difference to the atmosphere when we were out walking, and they said its nice their dog has a new friend now. their dog is usually extremely dog shy too, and they didnt think ruby would manage to get close let alone have her chase her around playing together. really made a difference to the usual wide berth shes given by owners with their dogs

I get it all the time, people crossing over when they see me and Zeus, people giving me a disgusted look, etc. I'm just waiting for someone to say something about Zeus or his breed so I can give them a piece of my mind

Re: When does breed prejudice start
It uspsets me to see people walking their dogs past other breeds off lead, then they spot Cassie and suddenly put theirs on their lead and give us a wide birth.I cant help but think what has she done, but that is the human thing because Cassie really doesn't give two s***s she has more interesting things to sniff and i wouldn't want biggots like them talking to me anyway. But sometimes they suprise you, an american woman with 2 big dogs leashed her dogs about 100 feet away and i thought here we go.then we got about 10 feet away and she made her dogs sit and left them where they sat and asked if she could stroke Cassie, woah what a suprise we talked and she asked how she was with dogs,i said she is a rescue so we cant be sure,so she called her dogs over and all dogs got along, this woman made our walk so special and made us realise not all owners are the same and just ignore the ignorants because there is always someone who doesn't judge and understands dogs completely and made 1st contact in my opinion the right way for Cassie.

Re: When does breed prejudice start
How strange is this thread....we took our pup Blue to the park for the first time and met lots of other dog owners and young kids etc...awww a cute puppy what breed is he....Staffie I replied with that their body language immediately changed and seemed almost scared!!!
I then met another couple with their staffie who came over to see ours they had just rescued their dog from the RSPCA and said that in their experience pups to people are acceptable but the older the dog people seem to give a wide berth!! so so true!
Well as long as I love him dont really care what everyone else has to say.... >

Re: When does breed prejudice start
It wasn't all bad though. We have a camra award winning pub by us that brews its own beer. Dogs were very welcome. The first time I went I had a word with the landlord due to naxs aggression and he was fine . All dogs had to be on a lead. All dogs were on a lead and max used to sit on the seat at the side of me and get all the young ladies attention! Lol.
We only had one incident where the landlords dog came in to the bar and was off the lead . I didn't see it and Max lunged at it knocking the table over and several pints over people ......
What happened...... Were we banned.... Nope the landlord apologised, the Americans and Aussies who were covered with beer laughed there heads off !! They said it had made their day ?? Weird eh.
People still remember it and laugh. It really is the ultimate dog pub!!!

Re: When does breed prejudice start
as a new staffie owner, i was disgusted to hear a vets assistant say that they should stop breeding staffies.... Maybe they should stop breeding people that give these gorgeous loyal dogs a bad name...
I researched dogs for 18 months, before a decided that staffies are one of the best dogs to own..

Here in South Africa there doesn't seem to be as much breed prejudice as elsewhere, i'm with the Aussies on this one...more worried about my dog being stolen. We don't have dangerous dog laws like the USA and UK, maybe that helps. When we were planning to get a dog i spoke to all my friends about wanting to get a staffie and had an overwhelmingly positive response, all of my friends with dogs have invited me to socialize my boy with their dogs so... south africans love staffs. Jock of the Bushveld by Sir J Percy Fitzpatrick is afterall a true SA story and Fitzpatrick was from my neck of the woods. Staffs are so popular here it took me months to find one. So if you love staffs come to SA or go to Aus, your dogs will be loved.

Re: When does breed prejudice start
the uk definitely need to take a leaf out of the aussies and SA. Im sure my tash will show everyone how beautiful staffies are. They all love her so far, although she is only 5 months old. Its actually only my parents and hubbies parents who have been negative about her, but thats because their ignorant and just read the papers!

It doesn't help when parents set a bad example to their children by shrieking and flapping about whenever a dog comes within twenty feet! :-<
