Clicker training
Hi..
I am checking out you tube clips on how to train my puppy when she comes home next Fri...
She will be 8 wk by then.
Is it ok to start training her immediately?
What do you think of this clicker method. I kind of understood the concept.... but I would like some opinion about that.
Have you all a nice Weekend
Marco

Re: Clicker training
The earlier you start training the better. Just keep the sessions short and end on an up note

Oh yes! Start right away!
Board-certified veterinary behaviorists recommend starting training with your puppy at 8-9 weeks. Give your puppy a day or so to adjust to her new home, but start right away with the socialization! Dr. Ian Dunbar recommends that your puppy meet a minimum of 100 new and different people in the first 90 days/3 months of life, so start counting! Before your puppy reaches 3-4 months of age your puppy should have not only met 100 new people, including children, but she should have been introduced to a wide variety of sights, sounds, smells and floor or ground surfaces.
Handle your puppy daily by gently examining her teeth, ears, paws, etc. and start teaching bite inhibition, i.e., learning to reduce the force of the bite immediately. To teach bite inhibition, just withdraw attention when your puppy bites too hard and re-direct to suitable hard chew toys. Do not say "ouch" or yelp unless your puppy actually hurts you since this can actually stimulate some puppies.
Start training using clicker training within a few days of bringing your new puppy home - start with teaching eye contact and a default sit. The Youtube videos I recommend are those uploaded by "kikopup" (Emily Larlham) and "supernaturalbc2008"/"supernaturalbc2009". "Tab289" does some good and accurate videos as well, but I don't know him.
Happy clicking!

Re: Clicker training
7 weeks old? I want to give you some free professional advice - a heads up, if you will. The ideal time for your puppy to leave the litter is 8 weeks because this amount of time has been found to be optimal for pups to learn how to interact with their littermates and inhibit their bite - through feedback from their littermates as well as their dam.
No problem that your pup left early - just be aware that you will need to teach her bite inhibition, or reducing the force of her bite. Rather than type a long explanation, I am going to refer you to an article written by a colleague of mine: http://www.clickertraining.com/node/3249
Best wishes to you and your new pup!
