Allergy
I thought I would post my new found knowledge about allergies.
My staff broke out with sores under his neck and they very quickly progressed onto his cheeks.
Constant scratching made it impossible for healing.
A trip to the Vets and he was diagnosed with HayFever.
The Vet said there was no cure and all I could do was to manage the effected area, however, he didn't tell me how.
I then started bathing the area with a weak solution of a generic antiseptic.
After the bathing, I applied Savlon.
This improved his condition, however, the area was still ichy.
On searching the internet, I discovered that a dog could be given antihistamine tablets that are used for humans.
I have a draw full of Zyrtec tablets and started him off with half of a 10mg tablet.
He is now on one 10mg tablet a day and the sores and itch are under control.
Dogs can have up to two 10mg Zyrtec tablets a day, if there are any setbacks I will up his dosage.
I sent an email to our Vet telling him what I had done, he replied that he knew about Zyrtec, however, he didn't think our dog would respond to them.
Well he did, if you suspect your dog has an allergy, Zyrtec may be the answer.
Hayfever in Australia is chronic at this time of year.

Re: Allergy
Yeah my girl suffers from a few skin problems too, she too scratches a lot, looks like she is a real fleabag Although she has no fleas.. Zyrtec is the similar to Pririton, which I have seen advised to give on the forum by other members. Zyrtec dosage is 10mg per 10kg. Although if one 10mg tablet is helping the problem I would not increase the dose.
Another good thing to give them for allergies and rashes is fish oil tablets, I give Steff a fish oil tab every day and it seems to help..

Re: Allergy
I think to be honest that's a pretty poor response from your vet and I would be tempted to go elsewhere next time you have a problem

Re: Allergy
Often thru the summer I had to give my girl a piriton, she was generally itchy and her eyes would look reddish. The piriton keep it under control and she was more comfortable.
Another thing that's reccomrnded is wiping them down with a damp towel after walks - this will help remove any pollen or irritants from grass etc.
