Sad Hidden Danger!

Post by kelpie Fri Nov 09 2012, 16:48

It's been one of those days today, Rolo has been a pickle but he's young and stupid, so all is forgiven. In an effort to calm him down we went off over the fields for a good run and a play with a friend and her dog. We regularly go there and I know that there are horses sometimes on the other side of one hedge, but he's never shown any interest and as always I popped him on the lead for that part of our walk. Today however, we got past the horses, as we'd seen they were up the top end of the field (We are in the field next door) so as usual I let Rolo back off... he merrily bounces around playing till he saw a bird in the hedge! That was it... Full pelt through the hedge... I dont want to s Onset panic.. But I call him, and I run away from the hedge. " Rolo!! Wheres Mummy?? " I shout and Lord bless the boy he came flying straight back applause Sadly on the other side of the hedge was several rows of barbed wire. Rolo never winced, but he came back with his poor face badly gashed. He also has a snag in his ear, across his nose, a rip in the back of his neck and a gash along his back. Crying or Very sad I know it could have been a lot worse, thank god he didn't catch his eyes or catch a vein, investigate the horses.. it could have been so different. I just want people to be aware of this barbaric stuff, I wouldn't have thought they would have had it around horses, especially as they have an electric fence around one part, but lesson learnt... you never know what hidden dangers lurks on the other side of a hedge Sad Meanwhile Rolo is home and happy to be back with his stagbar Smile

Wow, that could've been much worse Sad glad he's alright besides that though. Least he came back. I practice Loki on the field letting him chase birds and then calling him back, so I know he won't just disappear. Barbed wire though...that's nasty.

Aw, Thank you all for your Hugs, they have all been past on to Rolo >Big Grin< Just found it scary that farmers still use barb wire around livestock and on public footpaths, it's a danger that i hadn't really thought of and just wanted to make others aware it's out there. A good recall really did help save the day, that and the head down bull terrier run I think saved his eyes! x

I think there will always be barbed wire around livestock, including horses, and I can't see it changing. I still have scars on my leg, 50 years on, from barbed wire when I escaped through a fence from stampeding horses.

Heal well, Rolo >Big Grin<

I hate barbed wire. I have seen so many good horses put down cause they've ran into it. Saw a sheep in it once and got the farmer to free it. Ha a dog get caught in it once too. Not nice stuff Sad

Poor Rolo!! I keep a horse and use both Barbed wire and electric fencing as it's a total pain when they get out. The horse learnt his lesson with the barbed wire like your dog did and never did it again..... As he's young and very excitable he may not remember for long though. We have never let any dog off the lead around horses, cow ect regardless of the breed or age for a very simple reason. The horses like to run, so do the dogs and when the horses go...... The dogs will give chase. I've seen a normally calm horse kick and break a dogs jaw before now purely because he was scared. Nobody wants either animal to go through that kind of fear or pain.

I'm sure Rolo will be fine, treat him like we did my horse, nappy cream or vasiline to block anything from getting into it, refresh twice a day till it's dried up and I'm sure Rolo will be fine.Good luck
