Moo's progress

This is more for me and anyone that wants to give me positive vibes, I know I could do with it.

So the back ground for those who don't know, Moo has had a limp for a month now, been to the vets twice, apart from x-rays I am at my last point of call, a different course of anti-inflams for 14 days and total rest.

Day 2; stopped indoors all day, great day off, limp has been obvious in the house. Have put her very old bed on the floor (been under my bed for last 2 years) so she doesn't keep hoping up and down on mine.

Small incident of her running into the door (glass), she saw a cat, and she has a lot of energy to get rid of. Never has she done this before!

Just taken her out for a toilets, we don't have a garden so its a 2min walk, no limp visible.

She has now gone to bed, hers on the floor bless her.

Phoned a specialist vets today which you need a referral too, it sounds like an amazing place, but its £168 for a consultation. Just so down about it, and leaving her home all day alone breaks my heart.

Am waiting on a call from the vets to discuss booking the xrays, just have a horrible feeling that they will come back clear anyway, and then what do I do.

Is she limping this morning?

Very slightly, but yes its still there.

I just feel so guilty Caryll. Its no life for a dog being kept inside 23 hours a day.

On another forum (GSD) a dog has just got back to full exercise after having a hip replacement. He's 14 months old (so very lively normally), and had to have 6 weeks crate rest followed by 6 weeks short on lead walks. He's now back to normal & running around like a looney!

If it's recuperative, then you do it - Moo won't mind, and I'm sure she'll benefit from loads of hugs & fuss to make up for it!

So there is hope Xx

Of course there is! More than hope!

Dogs get some quite nasty pulls/strains & bounce back from them fantastically well. Give her body a chance to repair whatever's happened (possibly a tendon strain?) & that might be all that's needed.

Nothing to feel guilty about. If you don't keep her resting for most of the time, the alternative is to risk making it worse by letting her run around or release that energy. You're doing the right thing; at the very least, it isn't going to do her any harm to rest. Hope she gets back to normal very soon though

Don't despair please, I hate to think of you crying at work (or anywhere come to that).

Let's hope that it is "just" a tendon strain - they can take a good while to heal - I had a horse that was retired from racing because of one and as he had won races previously that decision couldn't have been taken lightly. But he was fine after he recovered from the strain.

Day 7;

Well half way through now.

Had a lengthy conversation with the vets today............

I am taking her in tomorrow at 10am to see an Orthopedic vet! I am so pleased. I might just get an answer, and if not at least my head will be straight on whats next.

Its a 30min consultation (only supposed to have been 15min but my vet extended it!) I think after having me on the phone for 2 days they have realised how worried I am (or there sick of me phoning!)

So thats a small sigh of relief! As for the limp, well good this morning and on my break, until a lady commented on how pretty she was, she decided to jump up, then she was limping again.

Got in from work, she greets me, no limp, ends up doing a circuit of the lounge, on/off sofa, so excited, and yes you guessed it limping again! I give up!

So I am looking forward to tomorrow in a strange way, I couldn't do it to myself to wait another week. Thanks everyone, positive thoughts vibes whatever for tomorrow. I so hope her small progress and tomorrow are surely a sign of good things to come Xx

Its certainly a sigh of relief Lynda, I am slightly concerned that I am going to have to keep Moo couped up though for a while longer (which is for the best). Why I why did I not start it earlier.

To me (and I'm absolutely no expert!) it sounds like a tendon.

Ah Janey don't beat yourself up about it, please. We all do our best for our dogs at the time and you are a great "Moo's Mummy".

Gosh (now there's an old-fashioned word!) I have rushed my pup at great expense in the middle of the night to the vet when he went off his legs - panic, moi? Only to find he was perfectly fine 7 hours later. But it could have gone the other way, we just don't know. In the words of a late loved vet and author "if only they could talk" - it would make our lives a lot easier.

And as Caryll says - I'm hanging out there for a tendon strain as well.

Dont beat yourself up mate. Everyone on here knows what moo means to you and that youll go to the ends of the earth for her. If i was a dog id want to be your dog.

I'm sure it won't be long and I'll be saying we are off for a 5 hour romp that includes a pub! (might be a good few weeks yet though!)

Patience Janey, don't get desperate again.

Chances are Moo WILL get back to normal. Just relax tonight and know that you are seeing another vet tomorrow, and we'll take it from there.

Janey, OF COURSE you want things to get back to normal, not selfish at all.

PLEASE don't cry - not long until tomorrow. You're taking positive steps and that's the most you can do.

Moo will bounce back. Just need the correct diagnosis so she can get the help she needs. Glad she has you to advocate for her and take care of her. We are all here for you and Moo.

Day 8;

Back from the vets, was what I suspected, she showed absolutely no pain at all.

The vet manipulated every joint and she just didn't show any signs.

So he wants her completely rested for another week, he said what I have been doing (prior to the last 2 days) was too much. So its literally out for a wee and home.

He has put her back on metacam, annoyed me a bit as when I said 10ml, as advised by the first vet he said no for her weight she should be on 20ml.

If after a week its still no better then its xrays, although he said they may not show anything up either, after that it will be a ct scan, which I just do not have a clue where I will find £1000 for.

So I feel very much like we are back to square 1 and I haven't really found any answers at all. Was quite embarrassing that I burst into tears in front of the vet. I just wish I had better insurance, but there's no point stressing over it cause simply I don't.

He said if its muscle damage it may take up to 6 months to heal, but he has ruled out tendons.

On the plus side he said she will get back to normal, just don't no when. Feel rather deflated & frustrated. Such a lovely day here and we can't go out and enjoy it.

So its another 7 days, and then xrays then who knows. Very sad.

You never know, the complete rest might well do the trick!

Never worry about crying in front of the vet, they are quite used to seeing peoples emotions, I would think it more strange if someone didn't cry because of their pet.

Really hoping it gets sorted for you and Moo. Would your vet let you pay the bill in installments rather than all in one go, it may be worth asking, some do some dont.

Hopefully the rest will work and the higher dose of antinflammatory may help as well. The good news is the vet said she will get back to normal it's just a matter of time and hopefully sooner than later

Hopefully the higher dose of meds and complete rest help her heal quickly.
Don't worry about crying at the vets, I'm a complete wimp when it comes to my pets and don't know how many times I've cried there. Once even for my pet mouse.

Shame janey, I do feel your pain...

I was sobbing like a little girl on the way to the vet the other day when I took Bons for his op... When I arrived I could hardly talk hahaha... It was really embarrassing in front of all the girl nurses and reception staff... But that's just how much I love my lil guy!!

Positive vibes all the way... Here's to a speedy recovery for both our mutts!!!

Try to look on the bright side - it could have been a LOT worse, at least he didn't find anything terrible.

Thank you as always for your amazing words. Half the reason why they advised against xrays for now is because they don't think anything will show up, and if it doesn't and she is still limping I don't want to think!

So hoping it does the trick.

Have made a step up onto the sofa and put a baby gate over the bedroom door to stop her jumping up on my bed. Gonna do this properly and pray!

Awww hope shes okay I have arthritis in both wrists and suffer terribly with tendonitis too I have good days and bad days it certainly doesnt hold me back or stop me from living my life and holding down a full time job. Im sure moo is going to be back to normal sending healing vibes from me and Duke ><

I just want a reason, otherwise I want to take her out, there is no limp when running, or pulling on the lead (she does a lot of that now, not that I let her.)

The vet has near enough agreed that xrays aren't going to show up anything, could I not let her have her normal walks to a limit, and just own a dog with a limp?

If it's an issue with a muscle like a pull or small tear than exercising could further damage the muscle. They can take quite awhile to heal as well and have to be gradually increased back to normal activity. It sounds like thats the issue and why the vet is saying to rest.
