Training suggestions please
Hello,
My name is Karen. I have a 2 year old female called Cali. We've had her since she was just 8 weeks old. She's an excellent dog, very smart and listens really well, great recall except when she get's excited. We aren't able to let her off lead because she is what I call "too friendly" if there is such a thing. What I mean by that is that she loves everyone and wants to say hi to all the people and dogs which is fine but she jumps up and we are afraid of her knocking someone over as she is very strong. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do to keep her from running to say hello to other people and dogs as I would love to be able to let her off lead for a good run around.

Until you have a very strong recall, I'd keep her on a long line - about 50' long is plenty. You can get some reasonable priced ones on ebay.
Just clip it on & let it trail, but make sure the end is always within easy reach. Every so often call her back & if she doesn't come straight back, pick up the lead & reel her in!
That way she gets some freedom, but you also keep control!

I still use my long leads (made from carabiners and climbing webbing) for Monte and Pigglette. Monte is similar to Cali and he can be obnoxious to other people/dogs. Pigglette, gets frightened of strangers and would run home if she wasn't on a long lead. Really is the best solution.

Have to go with the long line here, Rocky is very excitable with other people too, hence he is kept on the long line when anyone is around.

Yeppers, another advocate of the 50' line here. Fiver is great at recall unless there is another dog or anyone playing with a football so in the park he stays on the long line. I doubt he'll ever be able to control himself where balls are concerned though

Thank you all very much for the advice, I'll persevere with the long line. It's nice to hear other dogs are like Cali, I was worried I was doing something wrong.
