Re: collar and lead / harness
A harness is best for a dog that pulls to not place stress on the neck but you loose control of the head. A collar is good when you need to control their head. We put both on for walks and change back and forth depending on the situation

I used a harness at th start with Bailey, now I prefer a nice chunky collar!

Re: collar and lead / harness
Like jstaff says it depends on the individual dog/owner. I don't like harnesses much because I lose control of the head, but if you have a dog that pulls then a collar could hurt the windpipe.

We use a harness for Rocky mostly. Sometimes he just uses a collar and lead, with a wide collar.

Re: collar and lead / harness
If the dog pulls then I'd suggest a harness to stop any risk of damage to their neck. Loki doesn't pull when we walk, but he does when there's dogs close to us, so I prefer the harness. But if Sukie walks fine, she'll be fine with a collar

Get a gentle leader ( halti ) I cant praise ours enough. I never used to enjoy taking sky out on a harness as she took me for a walk, all her strenght is in her body and she was really strong. But the gentle leader she walks by my side on a loose lead and when she sees other dogs or people now she doesnt pull and is easily controlled now

I can't use a halti on Dempsey - with his head shape the halti rides up into his eyes.
You can get halti harnesses which have a lead ding on the front which are quite good.

Re: collar and lead / harness
I've just brought a "stop pull" harness for Zeus which works a treat, hes a real puller but this has calmed him down.
The only problem with harnesses is that his armpits are very sore and bleeding so you have to watch out for that. Another reason why I got the 'stop pull' harness is because it has two fleece pads which go directly under his armpits to stop chafing.
We're using his collar at the moment while his armpits heal but if your dogs a puller, I would recommend the stop pull harness:
