Getting attacked by another dog Empty Getting attacked by another dog

Post by Dan330 Tue Oct 09 2012, 14:47

Hi all,

My dog Monty is a 6 month old staff, over the last few weeks another dog on the park has taken a real dislike to him and has now attacked him a couple of times (its a westie). Monty doesn't bat an eyelid... infact he seem to just want to play but this dog really bit him today. I always have Monty on a lead as his recall isn't quite there yet. The westie is always ioff the lead and seems fine with other dogs... What should I say to the owner if it happens again as its only a matter of time before Monty retaliates which will only end with a hurt westie.

Hi & welcome to the forum.

It's the usual thing, isn't it? Nasty vicious stafford gets picked on by sweet little yappy dog! angry

I'm maybe not the person to answer this because I tend to speak my mind rather forcefully! But I suppose the best things would be what I used to do with my last boy, Bandit. He was dog aggressive & I'd always put him on lead when I saw another dog. If the other dog started to come over I'd call out, quite politely "Could you take your dog away, please, mione doesn't like other dogs". If they didn't listen, I'd repeat a little more forcefully. Then I'd yell "Take it away, or I let him off the lead!"

A bit different, as yours isn't aggressive, but something similar may help! Big Grin

Are there any signs around about keeping dogs on leads? if so there is the option of reporting them to your local dog warden

I agree about the same story different dog! Molly always gets barked at aggressively by the sweet little terriers but people drag their dogs from her because shes a devil dog Sad Poor staffs just seem to want to play while other dogs just don't like them! You could try in a friendly manner saying "can you please put him/her on a lead as he hurt my dog last time" but it doesn't always work. Does the owner apologies btw? Sometimes dogs are unpredictable so a usually friendly dog who is fine with others will take a disliking to another dog and go for them. I would at least expect a sorry.

I got a sorry today, I told her that the dog should be on a lead she just laughed and said that is fine as my dog wasn't bothered. I told her either way that if she saw me coming to put hers on the lead to which I got a bit of a mouthful.

The dog warden is a good idea however... thanks.

Hmmm, I fear a 6'4 bloke kicking the crap out of a Westie whilst holding a Staffie on a lead going crazy would only add to the negative perseption of the breed... Maybe I should just pick up my dog and run like a fairy through the park whist singing girls just wanna have fun!!! Wink

sigh
People are idiots. I would never let Callie continue to interact with a dog she obviously didn't like and wasn't nice to.

I have experienced a similar problem recently. The last incident resulted in me giving a large collie cross a swift size11 in the head after the owner refused to control their dog....

I got told that I would be stabbed if i ever kicked her dog again!!!!

I made a report to the police, dog warden & local housing authority!

This off-lead lark is really annoying me. Unless it's an off-lead park, keep your dog on a lead or training line FFS.
I don't care how good you think your dog's recall is, or how nicely behaved you think it is, sooner or later you'll find it gets bitten badly by an on-lead dog that isn't friendly. Then, you'll moan.

Rant over.

This is a very good reason for keeping your dog on a lead, you always know where he/she is. Rocky is on long line 99% of the time.

I understand what you mean, but I do let Dempsey off lead, although I keep well away from other dogs, unless I know them very well & know that they are ok together. I will literally turn around & walk the other way to avoid coming anywhere near another dog & if I can't avoid them, he goes on the lead.

Happened again this morning but managed to pick Monty up before anything happened... owner just said that I should let him get her dog to teach it a lesson. I advised her that this would then lead to my dog being agressive towords all Westies to which she replied "its a staff, there all aggressive".

I was gob smacked, I explained to her that my dog didn't have the issue and that if hers attacked again I would report her and it. Her dog then went to bite me as I was still carrying monty, told her to put it on a lead and get it away from me... she couldn't so it got a boot, she left crying saying she was going to the rspca and to expect a vets bill and to watch my back. Luckily a few people saw what happened and said they would be witnesses.

Considering her personality I think I would simply avoid her and her dog.

I can in the evenings but not in the mornings... Might just do road work for the next few weeks and keep out of her way.

If the dog went for you then it is dangerously out of control in a public place (you only need to be in fear of it biting you) always worth reporting to police even if you don't want to take it further. You could bet hands down that if it was the other way round she would.
