Re: How many walks a day?
try for about 3 a day 1/2 hour minimum , at the moment this is weather dependent. Is this a 4 mile lead walk with Buster ?? TBH it's a bit much for him at his age. You should be li,ited to 5 mins per month age on lead then you can add in some off lead time as long as it's somewhere he can go at his own pace and stop and rest when he wants.

Re: How many walks a day?
Rocky is now 2yr 6 months and he has an hour in the morning at about 9 am, then another hour at about 3pm, then about 45 mins at about 7pm. This is all approximate and can vary day to day.

Re: How many walks a day?
Hiccup has two walks a day - 20min in the morning with 20min of fetch at the park and a 20min walk plus an hour free play with the other dogs in the park in the afternoon and has a doggy playdate with his friend Abby during the day. Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of walking him more than that but he seems fine with that.
But be very careful with too much lead walking at a young age, as Dave said, work on 5min per month of age on lead.

Waaaaay too much at his age - you'll do serious damage to his growth plates & tendons!

Re: How many walks a day?
Moo gets a few lol, half hour before work, then 2 x 2hrs + walks with mum/walker, then another half hour before bed, on my days off we are out at 12 and back at 5, she is a spoilt girly and I don't have to do all the walking (although I do enjoy it just not in this weather lol)

Re: How many walks a day?
Hands slapped. But to be fair he's on a long lead doing his own pace. With his foster mummy Poppy a 2 year Jack Russell. Have to cut it down and take a papoose on the school run lol. Can't leave him in the house he looks at the parrot and I'm sure he's thinking ' One day you noisy bugger, one day' Ha ha.

Re: How many walks a day?
My pup is 8 months and he trots along next to me on my bike at about 10 mph and does about 30-40 miles a week so don't worry, when your pup gets older he will likely have more stamina than you. The most important thing is that they have water, shade and if they get out of breath they can rest and cool down, also my pup eats a little extra because of his excercise.
I am not saying that everybody's dog will be comfortable with this but mine laps it up, never seems to tire, will still play all night.

The water and shade is for the owner right? Always have drinks and when he wants to stop it's time to stop, also he doesn't pull, very calm when walking so not exerting that extra drag you along energy . Buster eats like a horse and still gaining weight at a phenomenal rate (another kilo this week making him 7.4kg) despite the exercise. Nothing better than dog walking to clense the thoughts and the soul.

Re: How many walks a day?
On average Tank has 30mins in morning and 30mins afternoon with me.
Diesel gets an hour going batshit crazy off lead chasing her ball with hubby.
Weekends vary as we take them either to the beach or marshes where the mooch about etc.
Pair of them are contented and happy.

Just take care - he won't know when he should stop. He'll just stop when he's exhausted & that's too late. He really shouldn't be getting more than 10 minutes on lead per walk, with maybe about 15-20 minutes (max) off lead play.

Re: How many walks a day?
Pixee has half hour to 3/4 hour in the mornings, again in the afternoon and tea time. Some days her 2nd walk will be hour and half. Weekends are longer and when hubby is not working we often take our backpacks and go on 2 to 5 hours walk. Pixee enjoyed those ones. If I dont have much time for the 3rd walk, its generally a 20min frisbree play in the fields, more than enough for Pixee.

Re: How many walks a day?
Ok now I'm confused 5 min per month, half an hour or 10 mins? ? ? ? seems like everyone has their own interpretation and choice. I'll ask the vet as too much conflicting advice on here. Not being stroppy but difficult to know what to believe. As I only asked how many times people walk their dogs I seem to have had hands slapped.

Re: How many walks a day?
Sorry it's confusing but we have 2 topics going on here , you asked about how many times you walk your dog (general question for anybody with any dog) and we have all replied . BUT what we have also noticed from what you said in your first post is that you're walking Buster way too hard at his age if you don't want to risk him damage for the future. Nobody is slapping your wrists as you put it , just making you aware of facts that you don't seem to know.
Guidelines for LEAD walking of all puppies is 5 minutes per month and this is on lead walking only , you can build in some play eg a 5 minute walk top the park and a 5 minute walk back with some free play in the middle as the pup will move at its own pace and rest when neccessary . If you are constantly walking 1 direction the pup will be following you as he doesn't want to be left behind hence he goes and goes and goes regardless of a short lead or a long lead , it's not about physical exertion either, hope you understand now

Re: How many walks a day?
As Dave says, we're just pointing out that you could be damaging your dog. How on earth can you get the hump about that? Who mentioned 30 minutes for walking a 2 month old pup?
Seriously, we are trying to point out something you may not be aware of!

Re: How many walks a day?
So your pup is approx 11 wks old ? I take it he has had all his vaccinations ? Usually first lot is 8wks then 2nd lot at 10wks....then a week for them to be reliably effective so ur pup is good to go walking safely from approx 11 wks.
After that u only wanna walk him for short periods. I used to take mine at 11wks on 2 x 10min walks. This was basically the school run which is like 2 roads away.
My pup is 6mths old now and I still don't walk him for longer than 30-40 mins each walk.
4miles is such a strain on lil legs as well as damaging to his paw pads. Staffys have high tolerance to pain so u won't necessarily know when he's had enough.
Even if he seems he can go for long walks, u wouldn't wanna risk damaging him.
Xx
