What's that smell??
Info: My pup is 8 months now and yet to have her first season.
Details: Last week she had lay against me on the sofa for a while (as she does every day) when I noticed a strange pungent smell, a not very pleasant one, as I stood up and walked into the kitchen the smell followed me - it was this point I sniffed my shirt and the smell was on my shirt! Shirt off & into the washer. Went back into the living room and the smell was on the cushion that had been behind my back, cushion into the washer. Went back and the smell was coming from the back of my pup...
The next day the smell had gone and hadn't returned since.
Today, about a 4-5 days later, the smell has returned - again eminating from my pup
Is this a sign she is coming into season? Any ideas??
I can't even describe the smell, it's not like anything I've smelt before...

Re: What's that smell??
It could be the startings of her 1st season.
There is a horrid smell with some in season females, and its perfectly normal

I get the feeling it's that, but don't see many obvious signs that she is coming in to season as yet.
The smell had come and gone in about 20 mins this time, strange.

Re: What's that smell??
As dave said it can be the beginning of season. is her vagina swollen at all? It will do when she is in heat. Also has she been vaccinated against parvo? I don't want to alarm but parvo has a god awful smell.

Re: What's that smell??
She had vaccines up-to-date when I got her from RSPCA @ 12 weeks
I presume "parvo" is covered??
I have a vaccine card which shows:-
23/02/12
Vanguard (DA2Pi)
Vanguard (CPV-L)
Nobivac (KC)
Next vaccination due: 2 weeks
08/03/12
Vanguard (DA2Pi)
Vanguard (CPV-L)
Next vaccination due: March 2013
---
I assume I don't need to do anything else to cover "parvo" ?!

Yes it is, so then i assume it is just heat. If she had parvo you would really know it, so just keep her away from the boys and prepare to get cleaning up after her. I hear some people use diapers lol

Re: What's that smell??
Sounds like season to me, Mia's teats became enlarged when she came into season, her lady bits all swelled up and the first few days there wasn't much mess, I don't remember a really foul smell, but there was a definite whiff that was different.

Re: What's that smell??
Is it a metal -ly (sp) smell ? If so, it is her anal glands emptying. Sophie does this on occasions and the vet confirmed it was her glands. Also, when she had them squeezed at the vets she stank for a brief while after

Re: What's that smell??
Anal glands can smell really bad!
With all the dogs I've had I've been so lucky - only 2 have had to have their glands emptied.
I left that pleasant job to the vet.

I get this smell with Zeus too, its like a metaly/fishy smell, its horrible! Its the same smell that came out when he had his anal glands emptied so I've always put it down to that.
