strange sores and mounting issues
Romeo has these crusted sores that have appeared on the back of his neck, and where they are his fur has fallen a little... has anyone ever heard of this?
Also he was a right monseter today. my friend has a 3mth old poodle pup... Romeo would NOT leave it alone even though there was a female dog in the room and the pup was male. he was trying to mount it, and when we ended up removing the pup he charged up to my friend and started humping her leg and when i had him he started to hump my leg! he has not done that since he was 8 weeks old!
It was evry annoying, so he got told off and put out side, but even after repeatable trying to get through to romoe that he could not hump we ended up having to tie him up inside since it was raining out side... ahhhhgg... its like he's a naughty little 6 year old that just wont learn from his mistakes or punishment... grrrr.... just gotta keep at it. but i might need to get those sores checks. Romeo has the specialty this weekend

Oh, dear, he's really pushing his luck, isn't he?
The little scabby bits might be insects bites that are healing over?

Make sure he has a nice wide collar on - the judge won't see the baldy bits!

Re: strange sores and mounting issues
yeah i think that might be needed, hope it clears up or it will be a trip to the vet i think, i will keep an eye on them and hope they clear up soon, or its a trip to the vet
Re: strange sores and mounting issues
Also.... why is Romeo SO OBSESSED with mounting male puppies? he has been trying for hours... and you'd think after being told no and being locked out side as well being tied up and a clip on the rump when he just didnt get it that he would... i dont know... clam down after a few hours... but its going on 5 hours of us being here with them and he is still panting like a train and fixated on the pup and mounting it, even though i have tried all types of distractions, food, toys, training,..... garhhhh... damn dog
lucky the poodle pup is small and safe up on his owners lap, but this is not the first time Romeo has been fixated on male puppies... its.. odd... he has almost no care about females....

Does it sound like this? I was reading up on this just the other day:
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/care/hotspotsdog.htm
As for the mounting, I read that it's primarily as a form of bonding. It's meant to be the closest thing to a hug in the canine world so maybe it's that?

Its a bit off topic, but I watched a show where they had a makeshift china shop, and they let 4 bulls go through it. Absolutely nothing was broken, no shelves were bumped and nothing was knocked off the shelves. It was actually quite amazing
I don't know about the humping, Maska has never tried humping anything, except his stuffed snake once when he was a pup. I can understand that this would be very annoying though. Maybe he was just having one of those doggy days , pushing boundaries and testing your patience.
Loki doesn't have the same problem as Romeo, but I have noticed that when she gets bitten by something, or if she scrapes past tree branches, she also looses hair around the sore spots. Nothing seems to affect Maska, but Loki seems so fragile in comparison. I use Aloe gel on Loki, and it does seem to make the hair grow back quicker, and it soothes the skin.

Re: strange sores and mounting issues
Aloe gel might be a good idea, when ever something bites romeo he alwasy swells up like crazy or is scars.
its basically only puppies that he torments like this. other males and bitches he leaves well enough alone.
he is 10months... i guess that makes him 7yrs in human.... but he sure acts like a tween

Do you have a picture of the bumps we can look at ?
The humping could be a dominance thing, or a reaction to something that has excited him. Tell him a firm NO when he does it to get him out of the habit.

Re: strange sores and mounting issues
no doesnt work, normally it would in any other case but he just goes out of his mind, what i'm trying is giving him treats when he is clam. right now he is being peaceful with a rawhide shoe... but the puppy is up on the bed, so we'll see
Re: strange sores and mounting issues
A young pup doesn't as such have the scent of it being a male or a female.
Dogs don't go by seeing a dangle thing or not to determine whether the dog they have encountered is male or female, its scent they go by and as a pup has none its more likely to get humped, and the same goes for desexed dogs the likely hood of them getting humped is greater too.
As for the spots bathe them in a bit of salty tepid water or hibi scrub just to keep the area clean and they should heal by themselves.

Re: strange sores and mounting issues
i think i'll do that right now Denise, thank you for the advice. It does exsplain romeos strange fondness for humping puppies
Re: strange sores and mounting issues
so i just washed him in warm salt water.... much to his horror, if you recall... romeo is scared of water... all water.
i hope it starts to clear up, poor little bloke

No, hot spots are almost always red, raw & wet. They generally cover an area of approx. 1" or more.

No, nothing at all to do with a hug as humans see it! Certainly not affection! It's partly sexual, but mainly dominant. As Denise says, pups don't have a sexual 'smell' so they tend to get dominated by humping.

Re: strange sores and mounting issues
i just read through that hot spot thing, and while romeo's are not weeping it does sort of close. he is wet now though after being washed in his salt bath.
I'll see his breeder today and find out

Re: strange sores and mounting issues
and there are very distinct bumps that the redness comes off from
Re: strange sores and mounting issues
It really doesn't sound like hot spots. My money would be on insect bites.

Re: strange sores and mounting issues
yeah there are quiet a few of them. last time romeo got bitten by bugs he came up in almost a hive like reaction... thre are about 6-8 bumps on his head and around his neck that have come up all angry, small bumps... but there non the less
Re: strange sores and mounting issues
Ledger had a bald spot and lump on his neck a month or so back I just put it down to a tick or insect bite from being in long grass it didn't bother him and healed pretty quick
As for the humping Ledger was approached by a staffy/lab dog x the other day in the park the owner running behind shouted over 'is it a bitch' and I said no at which point he ran faster as his dog immediately mounted Ledger who appeared completely unphased by it all! As he pulled his dog off he apologised but I'm guessing as Ledger is neutered he ended up being a humping and not an aggression target

Re: strange sores and mounting issues
sadly for me, romeo has his manlyness still... and he's so young and VERY easy to get excitable. if the other dog cries or runs it makes it so much worse, better in most cases when they growl or snap at him.... i really hope these sores heal quickly
Re: strange sores and mounting issues
Mounting in an adolescent dog may be a dominance issue. When Tyson went through a phase like this I would put him on the lead and have him sit by me in time out. He had to sit quietly. Usually this was at the park and it was agony for him watching the other dogs running around. I would let him off and if he did it again ...back to time out. It took a while but he got the message that it was not acceptable behaviour.

Re: strange sores and mounting issues
yeah.. i think its going to be a long up hill battle for me in that area, Romeo is very persistant
Re: strange sores and mounting issues
Tali gets these sores, they are insect bites. When the scab over and the scab falls off it takes the hair with it. It looks horrible but is fairly harmless. If he gets them again give him 5mls of childs piriton and the swelling should subside.
