Advocate or Advantage ????
Well I've been using advocate on my 2 and am gonna be getting a new prescription to get some more, I've been doing a lot of reading and apparently Advocate and advantage are the same....
No script is needed for Advantage whereas advocate needs a script and cost about double !
So I was wondering what other ppl thought ?

Re: Advocate or Advantage ????
In the past I have used advocate to get rid or demodex or if a dog has a flea problem. I don't use any of them unless I absolutely need to but think advocate is pretty good as it covers so many parasites. On our oldie we use frontline, but only because shes so old and sensitive to everything that we stick with what we know!

Re: Advocate or Advantage ????
I use Frontline on Saffy and my cat Ninja but for some reason frontline doesn't work on my cat Kitty. So for her we use advantage. Seems to work ok.

Re: Advocate or Advantage ????
I read that in the USA advocate is called Advantage, and also covers parasites which cause mange even tho it dosent say it on the box.

Re: Advocate or Advantage ????
But if your dog isn't having any problems with demodectic mites, why use chemicals to get rid of them? All dogs have them, they just occasionally multiply & cause a reaction, but it's actually quite rare for there to be a demodex problem.

Re: Advocate or Advantage ????
I worm every month until 6 months old & then every 3 months for life. But I never use flea/mite preparations unless there's a problem.

Sure! That's interesting to know. I have a similar mind about it. I never de-flead my Yorkies and they never had fleas, apart from the odd one. I don't know but it seems as if the fleas get immune to it to me after a while. Like head lice did.
However, my cats are constantly bringing them home so I'm stuck in the cycle of flea-ing them. Little s*ds. But again, I wonder sometimes whether frontline etc. just makes it worse....

Re: Advocate or Advantage ????
Hi I follow the same routine as Caryll apart from this time my vet competely guilt tripped me into a 3mnth course of treatment for Ava as a new pup i was giving her advocate monthly and a wormer i wasn,t comfortable with over medicated her and now she has run out but i am thinking of going towards mibermax has anyone used that? I am told it is a wormer that also treats lungworm?Caryll wrote:I worm every month until 6 months old & then every 3 months for life. But I never use flea/mite preparations unless there's a problem.

Re: Advocate or Advantage ????
Good to know thx all for ur replies !
Will indeed leave it for a time maby 3 mths, like said chemicals aren't always a good thing and treating when necessary makes more sence !

I worm them using diatomaceous earth and using it correctly will kill any worm they might have

I use Milbemax (well, not me personally, you understand - I get it for Dempsey! ). It's a palatable one so he just eats them (he has to have two because he's such a weight). Easy to give & yes, they cover lungworm.
It doesn't treat lungworm, it helps prevent it. You can only treat it when the dog actually has it, and then they use something totally different.

Re: Advocate or Advantage ????
My oh once (years ago when Bandit was still young) was trying to get Bandit to eat a worming tablet. We didn't have anything suitable to stuff it in, so he put the tablet in his mouth, between his teeth, but sticking out so that Bandit could grab it. Normally, Bandit would very gently nibble whatever was in the oh's mouth & take it for himself. this time he got really excited & head butted him in the mouth.........down the oh's throat went the wormer!
