Advice needed
Maisy is fine out and about and in face to face contact with other dogs. She is now socialised quite well the only real problem is on the lead with a dog on the other side of the road. I do not think it is aggression just a need to be where the other dog is. She has thrown herself into the road still on the lead, she starts to scream until I can take her mind of the other dog wich takes some doing. Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Advice needed
treats for distraction ?? Tilly gets really sidetracked when she sees another dog she likes the look of on the other side but ususally a sharp tug and she's on her way again with the occasional glance over her shoulder . I also normally shorten the lead so I have her closer (like when I'm passing a strange dog) as her lead shouldn't realy be long enough that she can throw herself in to the road , for the safey of her and anyone using the road

Hi you don,t mention how old maisy is but if she is a young dog it sounds like over excitment and the real need too get too the other dog, BUT you do need too nip this in the bud now, as i had a friend dragged infront of a car by her staff trying too get too another dog across the road.
You must remain firm and calm i have many staffs with this problem and i would take control with a tight lease getting them too sit or close next too you using what command works for you, mine was wait, treats work but the most important thing is getting control of your dog and by stopping them moving or pulling you until the destruction passes, i would try testing this method as often as possible if you can i use too sit opposite a park with my dog where lots of dogs past and just worked on trying too keep her calm it will take time lots of patience hope it helps but i,m sure your get lots of advice on here.

Re: Advice needed
Thanks for the replies. She is now close on 10 months old. I should have elaborated a bit more on the road. She has a fairly shortish lead but if she catch's site of a dog before I do that is when she lunges. She is fine in the park with other dog's either on a 15 mtr tracking syle lead or off the lead. But I shall persevere I have not had this problem with any of the Staffs that I have had in the past. Thank you again for the advice

Re: Advice needed
Work on a watch me/focus command then when you see another dog ask her to sit and watch me then reward her for giving you attention.
Whatever value reward required, if treats don't work out and about, even high value ones try a tug toy or something. Basically you just have make yourself more interesting than the other dog so she'd rather focus on you than try and get to the other dog.
It's a problem many people have as they put so much emphasis on having good experiences with other dogs that the other dogs become more exciting than themselves.
Just interacting with her whilst out walking will help you become more exciting (not saying you're boring here BTW! ) like stopping every so often and practising some commands and rewarding or having a game of tug or similar.

Re: Advice needed
Great advice from all above. I agree that it sounds like over excitement. My guess is, when you see another dog when she's on the lead, you tense up, because you know what's about to happen. I know its easier said than done, but if you see another dog, stay calm and relaxed, call her name in a cheery voice so she looks at you, then keep her focus by a squeaker or something that works for her and carry on walking past. If she stops, or looks back, call her name again, in a high voice to reclaim her attention and continue on. If you tense when you see another dog, she'll feel it and that will just fuel her excitement. Good luck

I started off from the very beginning with getting Molly to sit when feeding and also sit for getting a treat. I clicked my fingers, she sat, I held my finger up until she stopped wagging the tail and relaxed but kept eye contact with me or the treat, then I rewarded her.
She is now nearly 6 months. If I have her out and about and she starts acting the ejit I get her attention, click my fingers and she sits and will sit until I reward her, sometimes with a treat and praise and sometimes with praise and affection only.
It would have taken me years to have my old English Bulle Terrier dioing this!!
