Re: New puppy with existing family dog
If the Staffy pup is raised with a smaller dog there should not be any issues. Suki is great with smaller dogs and very gentle. It will just be a matter of training and supervision.

Hi and welcome from me and Tilly sorry I can't help on the small dog question. Tilly will generally avoid / ignore small dogs as she just sees them as yappers and like to play with the big boys, but that is outside , she's never really had the opportunity to socialise with smaller dogs as all our friends and family have larger , bull mastiffs, lurchers, labradors and other staffs etc

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
So long as they are socialised there shouldn't be a problem having them together.

Re: New puppy with existing family dog
Hi
Just thought I would throw in my 2 cents I have had my Staffy pup for 2 weeks and he ADORES my sister's 1 year old Pomeranian. We live in the same building and he keeps stopping outside my sister's door like 'ooh, can the Pom come out and play?' Took a few days for them to get used to each other, my staff was a little rough at first but the Pom soon put him in his place Hours of fun watching them!
xx

Great experience , you say the keyword when you say rough as Tilly is exactly the same but she gets on great with everyone she meets as long as they can take a little beating every now and again

Just to agree with everyone else really.. supervision, a strong NO when things start getting to boisterous and good socialization is the key. Rolo has grown up with an older Kelpie.. but he's also very good with our 2 lion head rabbits who he shares the garden with... however they are never left un supervised!!! Good luck

Re: New puppy with existing family dog
I think it's more the pom than the staff that you might have problems with because the pom will see the staff as an intruder (not literally, you know what I mean) whereas the staff will be a pup so will grow up used to the pom and the pom will correct it if it plays to rough.
As long as you set the boundaries straight away, and watch them closely at all times, it should all work out. Your pom may be a little put out for a while, but should adjust. Good luck

Re: New puppy with existing family dog
Thanks everyone for ur advice my Pom is a bit of a weird one he's crossed with something.. He's very playful with other dogs and he's got long legs so he's fast lol he just gets stroppy when big dogs snarl at him coz we were attacked by a German shepherd 12 months ago so we are both a bit jumpy around big dogs.. I'm thinking I might get a girl staffy she will b about ten weeks when we get her given she has been weened by then. My bf is very good with disciplining dogs whereas I treat them like my babies (yes I know-bad leader).

Re: New puppy with existing family dog
My oh sister has a Pom.
When she brings her to our house she goes mental at bode, jumping, snapping growling etc.
Bode I think honestly finds it funny, doesn't flinch, then runs past her and jumps over her to wind the Pom up..
Secretly in the back garden when nobody is looking they are sniffing about together without any issues.

Re: New puppy with existing family dog
I have a chinese crested. She is just over 3. Buster was almost 6 months when we got him. LuLu has been a bit iffy with him, but he is the first dog that has ever been in our house since we have had her, so I did expect her to be a bit funny. For the most part now she is fine with him, but she doesn't like it when he gets really bouncy. She is ok with other dogs of all sizes when out on walks, as long as they don't try to play rough with her - she likes to run about with them though. Buster is fine with LuLu and he is slowly learning that she doesn't want to play (although he has the occasional moments where he will try to get her to play, but LuLu soon reminds him) They do sleep together in the evenings though.
To be honest, I think I may have made things worse with them settling in together. I kept calling Buster away when he was being a pain and not leaving LuLu alone. I asked for some advice on here and was told to try leaving them to it. Since doing this they have both calmed down alot!
With a smaller pup I think they should settle quicker (my brother brought his jack russell pup round to meet my dogs the other day, and LuLu was fine with him straight away, although he didn't try to playfight with her as he was too interested in Buster!) Just keep a close eye on them, and step in if it looks like they will get too rough, but they should sort themselves out soon enough
